Black Voters Fret Over Obama
The Wall Street Journal ^ | September 12, 2008 | GARY FIELDS and JONATHAN KAUFMAN

An anxious murmur is rising among black voters as the presidential race tightens: What if Barack Obama loses?

Black talk-show hosts and black-themed Web sites are being flooded with callers and bloggers reflecting a nervousness -- and anger -- over the campaign. Bev Smith, a nationally syndicated radio talk-show host, devoted her entire three-hour show Monday night to the question: "If Obama doesn't win, what will you think?"

"My audience is upset," she said in an interview. "Some people said they would be so angry it would be reminiscent of the [1960s] riots -- that is how despondent they would be."

Warren Ballentine, another nationally syndicated talk-show host, said: "Once Sarah Palin was picked and African-Americans saw the Republicans ignited again, they got worried. We are scared now."

The worries aren't universal. New York Gov. David Paterson, a Democrat, acknowledged the concerns about race. "I am hearing those jitters," he said. But he said many Democratic candidates have lost the presidential race in recent decades and "they were white candidates. African-Americans need to remember that."

Black nervousness could help Sen. Obama, the first African-American to head a major-party ticket, by boosting black turnout in November. One caller to Ms. Smith's show Monday said she was so worried that she planned to go to her church to begin working on a voter-registration drive.

If Sen. Obama loses, "African-Americans could be disappointed to the point of not engaging in the process anymore," or consider forming a third political party, said Richard McIntire, communications director for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Pulling the race card again hoping that white guilt will influence voters to vote for Obama, especially Dems. It is a tactic of fear and intimidation to keep white Dems in line.

This is stupid. If Booker T. Washington were running for president, I'd vote for him.

Its not about Obama's "color", since I barely consider the guy "black" (Half white, and not raised in the American "Black" experience), its about the vacuity of his candidacy.

In thirty days it won't be "what if", it will be "what happened".

Thirty days later it will be "we wuz robbed!"

And a mere 1459 days later we'll have a young and vibrant V.P. Sarah Palin against a tired old white woman named Hillary.

“If he loses, it will shake the very ground that we stand on mentally as far as what we need to be to succeed,” said Robert Gordon, a 48-year-old engineering surveyor from Dallas. “From day one, we’ve been told to be a certain way, to be neat, intellectual, speak clearly. He is the symbol of what we were told to be by our parents and by society as a whole. If this doesn’t work, what does that do to our psyche? What do I tell my sons?”

Oh please. Is he really saying that any black man who is “clean cut and articulate” deserves to be president or else his “psyche” will be damaged? Because that’s what I think he’s saying.

I am skeptical, but also concerned.

I hate to be so cold about it, but I am not concerned at all. It will be their own nest they will be pooping in. Obama is the candidate of urban America. Those of us who live in rural America will just watch the despicable behavior, shake our heads, and say "There they go again."

They will be sorry if they riot. That’s not a threat that is my belief that this time the rest of America knows that welfare, affirmative action, preferences etc. that were in response to black rioting before have only resulted in their demanding reparations.

Last time people felt sorry for blacks and believed that giving them special treatment would enable them to finally make it - many have, but ALL seem to think they are simply entitled.

Nope, nada, no more.

If they want their candidate to be accepted by the rest of American, they need to pick someone who isn’t an insult to the rest of us. And that is the nicest thing I can say. Our very lives are at stake here - Obama is unacceptable in EVERY way.

So he’d better win, or else?

Well, someone has to lose. Every Presidential race this country has ever had, some white guy has LOST. Obama is the first black guy ever to get the nomination, and he HAS to win because he’s black? Well, let’s just cancel the election and declare Obama the winner, then. Save a lot of time, money and trouble.

Sheesh...

"Can people bring themselves to go into a voting booth and pull the lever for a black man?"

This ultra-conservative did just that with Alan Keyes in the 2000 presidential primaries.

They are defining themselves by their race...

Actually, they're rallying around ignorance... and resurrecting old stereotypes.

Vote for Barack, the candidate of change, peace and post-partisanship. Oh, and if he loses, we’ll riot.

If they do riot and endanger my home/family, I've got plenty of ammo.

The blacks and the NAACP have shown it’s about ideology not race. They wouldn’t vote for a black Republican just as they don’t support Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, or Condi Rice. They’re exactly the same as NOW. It’s not about empowering women. Only empowering left wing women.

“Some people said they would be so angry it would be reminiscent of the [1960s] riots —”

And do those people have anything to offer besides threats?

Another slim victory? I have concerns. The unhinged left knows no limits.

I'm concerned too, mostly because I live in Michigan.

Detroiters are upset with what happened re: Kwame Kilpatrick. Kwamilla Gorilla tried to inject racism into his campaign to save his sorry but and it failed, but there's a lot of unrest. Housing is at an all-time low and unemployment is some of the highest in the country, and everyone is looking for someone else to blame.

Now Geoffrey Fieger is thinking about running for Mayor of Detroit (even though he doesn't live there).

Someone needs to set up a big circus tent and start selling peanuts.

Can you imagine non-blacks threatening to riot if the non-black candidate loses?

Being black does not entitle you to be elected. It's called an election because people get to vote for who they want.

Actually, because black does entitle you to be elected because because of racial gerrymandering. Those Rorschach voting districts that ensure the black candidate always wins have inevitably brought us to this point.

The NAALCP and the Obama-Biden Dems may as well make their campaign slogan:

“OBAMA/BIDEN in 2008 OR ELSE!!!”

Considering the attitude expressed in this article, Gov Palin should have a double troup of Secret Service agents covering her.
