I remember MOM giving Grandma a “permanent” wave when I was younger. Man, that is the worst smelling stuff! Blech!

Just you saying that about the smell, reminds me of that stench. That was some awful smelling stuff.
My grandma used to do three aunts on Saturday mornings. Seriously. All three came over to have their hair washed, perms done and hair set for like 2-3 weeks. And two of them had their own rollers.
Honestly, the hightlight stuff smells worse. The guy I used to go to used this stuff that smelled like ammonia and did enough damage that I had most of it cut out. And with long hair, it took forever to get it to the ends.
