England has become the most crowded major country in Europe, official figures show.

The number of people crammed in has overtaken those in Holland, long the most densely-populated major nation on the continent.

A count released to MPs showed England now has 395 people per square kilometre.

Crowding has increased because of high immigration into England while the Dutch population has fallen or remained steady.

Population growth: Official figures show England has overtaken the Netherlands to become the most crowded country in Europe

Last night MPs who are campaigning for 'balanced migration' said the figures were a milestone in the immigration debate.

Beyond Europe, England's population density is among the highest in the world. Of countries with a population of at least 10million, England ranks third in density after Bangladesh (1,045 per sq km) and South Korea (498 per sq km).

This doesn’t include numbers for Scotland, N Ireland, Wales and various small islands. England is far more crowded than the above mentioned,

Well, Australia as a whole has around 3 per sq km but considering how heavily urbanized we are, once you get out of the capital cities the population density drops big time. The Northern Territory (520,901 square miles or 1,349,129 sq km) has a density (including the capital) of 0.15 per sq km and 0.07 outside of Darwin.

All the major cities are on the coast. Averages are pretty deceiving statistics. I like being able to drive 5 minutes and switch from "city" to virtually unpopulated. My front lawn has elk and moose tracks in the snow over much of the winter. Much of the land surrounding the city is potato fields.

Do you take advantage of exploring the "outback"? I've read a few interesting threads from Aussies who enjoy taking their 650cc thumpers out for a long ride. The feedback from those guys (especially tires) has been much appreciated as I get back into that activity.

My visits to Wales are usually characterized by a beeline from Heathrow to Aberystwyth. Sometimes I stop to visit with friends in Cardiff and Carmarthen. My family lived in Ysbty Ystwyth/Llanfihangel y Creudden prior to about 1863. Most emigrated to the U.S. I still have some distant cousins in Pontrhydygroes. Aber is a pleasant sized town. We walk everywhere until it it time to head to to visit friends in the local villages. My last trip to Cwmystwyth was punctuated with a snow storm. The B roads in that area don't have guard rails, so it was an interesting drive back to Aber.
