I’m surprised Obama bothered to stop in Elko—the county voted about 4 to 1 for Bush both in 2000 and 2004, and he couldn’t expect to draw a big crowd. I guess they consider Nevada up for grabs (as the polls suggest) so every vote counts. They’ll do better in Las Vegas with former Californians and illegal immigrants, I would guess.

If Obama loses this election by a close margin campaign stops like this one are going to be questioned as a waste of time & other resources.

Obama spent a lot of time in my area, central Pennsylvania, during the Dem Primary. It's another solidly Republican area. It made a sort of sense then, when the opponent was Hillary. But for the general election he'd do better to focus on areas where he is either strong (maximize his base turnout) or on areas with strong crossover tendencies.

Campaigning in conservative Republican areas is just not going to budge the meter.

Back to Hunter S. Thompson ~ a favorite of dope blowing Leftwingtards. He wrote a book about one aspect of Elko as he saw it. Even contracted out a bunch of the writing to a guy I know from the net.

Obama probably thought highly of Hunter, although probably not highly of the way he had his cremated remains shot from a cannon!

Obama went to Elko to pay homage to an MJ hero, not to draw a crowd. He sought solidarity with the Rolling Stone subscriber base.
