Well, consider the alternative:

Dead shop owner.

Kid goes up for life.

Kid gets to spend decades suffering for his stupid and malicious act.

Mom gets to miss her boy every day.

Sound good to you?

We could also go through the path where the perp pulls off the robbery, and goes on to do so again and again, until he gets caught, and then gets out and commits more armed robberies until he gets caught (etc., etc., ad nauseum) until he gets his third strike. Then his victims have to live with their trauma (I’ve had a gun pointed at my head and found it rather unpleasant) and he has life in prison and his mother misses her boy every day.

I would prefer this perp had been caught and reached by some prison ministry, and I agree that there is no glamour in using deadly force, but I also know this: If I ever pulll that trigger it will be in a situation someone can describe as “nice” because it will be a situation where someone is about to die one way or another and I’ll be making sure it isn’t an innocent party.

I’m all broken up insde just thinking about that poor young boy.

Good thing there are still comedy club tickets avaialbel for tonights show. I’ll laugh myself back in shape over a few beers.

By tomorrow I should be able to put this whole mess out of my mind.

...what were we talking about again?

Irresponsible, flipant responses are worth refrencing ??? Why don’t you call Brian and ask him how he is sleeping? ::::::::::::: You responded to several of them. So they were worth that much. One CAN call Brian, as he is alive. That's what matters. And, re: your post about me and my future, where'd you get the crystal ball?

Amariae Sanders was a 16-year-old boy who may have thought a San Pablo gift shop would be an easy mark. But when he vaulted the counter while armed with a sawed-off shotgun, he had no way of knowing that the store owner would fight back, police say. Brian Wogsland, the owner of A&L Posters on San Pablo Ave., had been robbed twice before and was ready when Sanders and another young man entered about 5 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said. He pulled a handgun and fired numerous shots, striking Sanders in the head and chest.

Brian, Good for you!1 I hope the thug's family - or the American Communist Lovers Union - or both - won't sue you but if you do, I know FReepers would help you!!

But -- defense comes first; remorse comes later...

You must live through the event to be able to live through the anguish, should it ever come to that. A doctor may be able to help any problems I have with having to use deadly force after the fact. But they certainly won't be able to bring me back from the dead.

Did they ever figure out what the perp’s motive was (other than wanting to kill two cops)?

As soon as “the kid” picked up a sawed-off shotgun in the commission of the crime, his age and his familial situation becomes irrelevant.

I agree that it’s “nice” in that the victim successfully defended his life and his property.

"He was pretty upset when we interviewed him," said police Sgt. Dave Lewellyn. "He obviously didn't want to have to shoot anybody. But he has been the victim of violent crime, and at some point he's going to have to take these kinds of measures to protect himself. He told us he was in fear for his life."

Excellent! That's exactly the way to play it. The most important part is: "He told us he was in fear for his life." Don't laugh and pop the champagne until after the cops leave.

I'm sure he was an "aspiring rapper."

Ha! That's the first thing I looked for in the story.
They're ALWAYS "an aspiring rapper".

To my family: Earth has no pain that God cannot carry. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. Love, Aunt Debbie, Neci, ZeAndre Debra Garbey (Puyallup, WA)

WTF??? ZeAndre??? Now that name is going to get him a good paying job!! Bill Crosby said something about parents giving their kids AFRICAN names that AFRICANS would be embarassed to use.

Afro-American parents, please stop giving your kids STUPID names, If two blacks applied for a job that I had open and one is named QuAndre and the other is named James, I'll pick the person who is named James, even if he was not as experienced as the other.

Does it continue in your estimation to be ‘nice’ if the shop owner is unable to return to the shop yet?

I just defined what I find “nice” about it...that the victim successfully defended his life and his property.
