If you look at the Bush vs Kerry RealClearPolitics Poll Averages you'll see that from the final week of August onward 'till election day it was Bush who was the consistent front runner in the polls.
Kerry did have leads (from 1 to as high as 8 points) on Bush in polls taken during the summer, but those polls are of little value because relatively few voters are fully engaged in the race.

Another thing about polls is they poll “likely” voters. What about all the unlikely ones that are jumping out and showing up like madmen/women to Sarah’s events? Republicans don’t draw 60k crowds - only libs do, and only if they throw rock concerts to get them there. So, I think the polls are missing the unlikely voters for Palin(McCain).
