I heard he will propose a three man commission to do the oversight (aka supervision):
Warren Buffett
Michael Bloomberg
Mitt Romney
Dem, Independent, GOP representation by three guys who know their way around financial documents.
Sounds fair and pretty smart to me, both from an execution perspective and politically. McCain has stepped up and is leading on this issue. Obama has yet to propose anything.
Do we get to vote on this?
I've been listening to Bob Brinker, and he lays the meltdown and financial crisis squarely on the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1999, signed by Bill Clinton, sponsored by Gramm, Leach, and Bliley.
So I've been looking into that. The act (in 1933) "mandated the separation of commercial and investment banking in order to protect depositors from the hazards of risky investment and speculation."
There may be better sources for commentary on the repeal, but I'll post a link to the first one I found:
Exit Strategy: Where is it? How long are we going to hold this junk? How will we sell it off?
The CEO pay limit was proposed by the Dims. Nice to see McCain grabbing on to it.
If they want to eat at the government's pig pin, they get treated like the pigs.
Sorry, if you have to have the government bail you out, you pay the price. I think McCain isn't quite strict enough, they should start inditing people on fraud for this.
