State of Washington Independents Say McCain is Clear Winner of 1st Presidential Debate

State of Washington Independents Say McCain is Clear Winner of 1st Presidential Debate: Immediately following tonight's debate between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama, SurveyUSA interviewed 1,000 state of Washington adults, of whom 631 watched tonight's debate.

Of all debate watchers: 40% say McCain was the clear winner. 38% say Obama was the clear winner. 23% say there was no clear winner.

But: Independents, the most critical, coveted and arguably most dispassionate group of debate watcher, gave by 4:3 the nod to McCain. Republicans by 6:1 say McCain won. Democrats by 6:1 say Obama won. Those two groups offset.

Debate watchers say McCain understands Iraq better, McCain understands Iran better, McCain understands Russia better. Debate watchers split on who they trust more on the economy, split on who was more presidential. Overwhelmingly, debate watchers say moderator Jim Lehrer was fair to both candidates. About half wish Lehrer had spent more time on the economy.

SurveyUSA state of Washington research conducted exclusively for KING-TV Seattle.

FWIW. I’m trying to remember the last time a Republican “won” a debate in one of these flash polls.

McCain won with the independents and self-described moderates. I think he he did what he wanted to do tonight.

To some extent flash polls have to be taken with a grain of salt, but I would have expected Washington independents to be less likely to rate McCain as highly as Uhbamuh.

To all, I would say do you best to stay even as you see polls and hear punditry. The news will seemingly be good one day and bad the next, but I really think, as I have long thought, that this election will be McCain's. Tonight reinforced that thinking on my part.

Here’s another poll of California. Obama of course “won” in CA, but independents were split:

Agreed. That’s why I called this a “SEMI REAL” poll.
It’s better than McCain being down, though. Also, Washington state? That’s pretty impressive.

Wonder when the first national poll with results for “Who won the debate” will happen?
I bet it will close, because most people probably went into a coma after an hour. Debates hardly ever live up to their hype.

Well I am glad these independents are not the same ones Frank Luntz had on his panel.

LOL one actually said Barak did not stutter but McCain did.

CNN did a flash poll with Obama “winning” by 13 points. Of course, what they don’t tell you is flash polls are usually done only on the West Coast due to the time zone issues

The focus group panels are jokes. I can tell these frauds a mile away because they claim to be independents/undecided, yet spout talking points like you’d hear from someone who reads Daily Kos every day.

On ABC, they had an a big fat guy from Chicago who claimed to have been undecided, but was now for Obama.

Yeap, if they called me at 12.30 in the morning to ask about a debate, it would not be pretty.

"Overwhelmingly, debate watchers say moderator Jim Lehrer was fair to both candidates."

I noticed that as well. I give the candidates McCain 60%, Obama 40%.

I must give my kudos to Jim Lehrer. He ran a fair debate, didn’t let himself become a part of the story.

Washington state leans Republican, if you don’t count boxes of votes mysteriously discovered in broom closets.

Lehrer gave up trying to get Obama to identify anything he might cut because of budgetary limitations. Obama instead offered universal pre-kindergarten baby-sitting. McCain should have contrasted his veto pen with Obama’s rubber stamp for the bills sent from Pelosi and Reid.
