Gee, Iron Jack, I was just gonna say that for me, his breakout BREAKOUT role was in THE VERDICT....and that, at just past 50. He seemed to redefine himself as an actor in that role, a troubled, down-at-heels lawyer who gets a case that presents him with a chance to redeem himself in his own eyes.
Loved THE HUSTLER,everything about it, and that was a pivotal role that helped established his stardom, from the early sixties (or was it 1960?)It was also a movie that stood out because of the great ensemble acting, virtually everyone in it was great, and surprisingly great : Scott, Gleason, Piper Laurie.
But it was THE VERDICT that cast him in a new light.
VERY MUCH the same way that THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE re-established Hollywood veteran Robert Mitchum for me.

Steve McQueen attacked life, Newman stalked it, walking in and out, McQueen attacked his cancer, Newman made friends with his.

I didn’t actually confuse the movies so much as the experience; after posting I realized that I had left out a sentence connecting them.
I guess I was too busy trying to make the point that the stage itself is all that’s left in the end.
Best Paul Newman scene ever.
Seriously, though, he was a great actor, and I'll miss him.
That was a good movie. I also liked “Somebody Up There Likes Me.”

Newman was a dyed-in-the-wool left wing liberal, but at this time, all prayers and thoughts go out to his family.<<<<<<
He was a great actor, and he put his money where his mouth was. I believe he donated the profits from his companies, and he built ranches for seriously ill children. He always spoke respectfully of his wife, and he enjoyed life to the fullest. I don’t recall ever hearing him rant or carry on like so many of today’s actors, he just quietly went about doing what he thought was going to make things better. The film industry is being rapidly depleted of people with class and integrity.
