Precisely, as my FRiend 8mm can attest, Reagan was LOSING the election through mid-October of 1980, but he ran away with it in the final stretch.
It was October 18, the day we did the Illinois bus tour from Eureka all the way down to the arch in St.Louis. Struggling against what we thought a massive current, we awoke from our exhaustion the next morning to find our world had changed. We had given no thought about losing, but fought as if our lives depended on it. I can’t speak for others but sure didn’t consider his losing as an option.
