Candidates differ on female draft

Monday, October 13, 2008 By Jerome L. Sherman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Even as the U.S. confronts two long wars, neither Sen. John McCain nor Sen. Barack Obama believes the country should take the politically perilous step of reviving the military draft.

But the two presidential candidates disagree on a key foundation of any future draft: Mr. Obama supports a requirement for both men and women to register with the Selective Service, while Mr. McCain doesn't think women should have to register. . .

Can you believe Obama, he said this is his way of teaching his daughters that they need to serve their country too. What a weak father, he can't teach them a lesson without perverting everyone else's way of life? How radical, to want to force women to enlist.

Spread the horror of war by drafting 18 year old girls.

Good one Obama.

Good one.

General Obama sure knows a lot about war.

Equal rights during communism
In the communist states, the emancipation of women was considered necessary for the overall socialist revolutionary project and was therefore ordered from above.

There are many support positions that women can fill in the military. Why shouldn’t they be drafted too, if a draft is ever called?

Because even if the females are directed into non-combat roles, it distracts from the conscription of males. Just as drafting 50 year old males (even though there are plenty of jobs behind the lines they could do) would distract from conscripting able bodied young males.

In addition, drafting women but not putting them in combat would, from a political & judicial standpoint, create the same quagmire that gay civil unions have created. We're told that permitting them will give the homosexuals something they want without giving them the full recognition of marriage. An appropriate “compromise”, right? No, because once civil unions are in place, we're immediately told that they're a form of apartheid and create a two-tier system which can only be alleviated by full-scale same sex “marriage”. The same thing would happen with a draft that sent men into combat and women into support positions.

You miss the point, he is a Commie and wants us all out in the Gulag.

Especially freepers.

The Left will never be happy until they totally destroy the U.S.

The battle lines are drawn, bring on the war.

During WWII, it was expected that fathers would go off to fight in the war while children would be raised by their mothers. Fatherhood would not excuse one from the draft except in unusual circumstances (I'm not sure, for example, whether a widower who had no other relatives to look after his children would be drafted). Exempting mothers from the draft would cause pregnancy rates to skyrocket at a less-than-optimal time.

Seems to work just fine in Israel.

Israel's a tiny country. They're unlikely to have to ever fight on their own a nation as big as China or Russia. And they'd quickly use a nuke if necessary to protect themselves. They don't go into places like Iraq or Vietnam and fight extended wars.

Things which might work okay in a tiny country without worldwide responsibilities might not work so well here. There are likely socialistic programs that work fine in Iceland that would be catastrophic boondoggles in our large, populous, multicultural America. The same is probably true for military configuration.

The Israelis feel that because of their position, being a small land surrounded by aggressive nations that want them dead, that they must maintain conscription and they draft females to handle non-combat roles. Perhaps there are extreme circumstances where women should be conscripted for such purposes. But virtually every other nation on earth gets by without doing that. I see no point in us doing it, especially when we have such a large anti-military element in our population, which would surely use a mass female presence in the military against us. And when we have activist judges and grandstanding politicians howling “sexism” all the time, threatening to send women into combat. And when the standards are already being lowered to make things more cushy for females in the military, even without filling it up with teeny boppers who would never join unless conscripted. And when pregnancy is a problem already in the military.

I see it the way you see it. I don’t like the idea of a draft for females, especially not coming from Obama. There is a difference between men and women. True, there are always going to be those women who will want to go off to war. But that is not a good excuse for drafting women. To me this shows Obama’s character. He doesn’t respect women the way a normal man would. And further more, it also shows that he doesn’t respect this country either. What happens if we get into a big war? Not only will the young men be sacrificed, but the young women too? Who is going to carry forward the next generation? Men fight wars and women have the babies. That’s the way it has always been. Obama is way too radical to be the next President. And I agree with everything you said. Obama wanting to do this is a red flag, he’s bad news.

And another thing, what kind of a man, who has daughters, would want to send his daughter’s into war? Isn’t that a natural male drive to want to protect his daughters? As a mother, I certainly have that drive. I don’t understand what is wrong with this man. Something is seriously wrong. He is way too radical. All of these connections to these radical people is no coincidence. He is way to radical. And have we gotten to the point now in our culture where our leaders on the right can’t speak against this insanity due to political correctness? I hope not. Because if so, we are in REALLY big trouble!

I don’t think Obama’s grandparents are typical. I hate to say this, but the first time I saw a picture, I thought that they looked like commies. I know that that is a terrible thing to say. But that was my first impression, especially the grandmother. I could be totally wrong, but that was the impression. Why is it that those who are the most anti-war want to draft women? It seems that they hate this country and just want to cause damage in any way that they can.

I don’t agree with you. This is off limits. Men need to be men, that’s the bottom line. I had the funniest situation happen about a year ago. I have a friend who has definite liberal tendencies. Last year you should have heard her going ballistic when her son had to sign up for the draft. It was hysterical, I know, because she asked to use my computer so that her son could sign up so he wouldn’t “get arrested.” You should have heard her go off! She agrees with you too. But it’s not because she is a conservative, that’s for sure.
