Obama leads McCain in Virginia

(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) – With just under three weeks to go before Election Day, Senator Barack Obama leads Senator John McCain in Virginia by 6.0% among likely voters, 49.2% to 43.2%. Obama’s lead appears to be driven by voter concerns about the economy. Asked to name the top issue that they would like candidates to address between now and Election Day, just over six in ten likely voters say the economy. No other issue breaks double digits. These findings are from the Christopher Newport University Virginia Poll conducted October 11-14 of 500 likely voters.

When asked which would be the second issue that they would like the candidates to address between now and Election Day, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan top the list at 20.4%, followed closely by health care at 18.5% and then the economy, gas prices and energy policy, and terrorism. Fewer than 7% want the candidates to address the personal character and integrity of the candidates, suggesting that voters have not responded well to Senator McCain’s efforts to make Senator Obama’s character and integrity an issue in the final weeks of the election.

Nearly 50% of voters think that Joe Biden is the stronger Vice Presidential candidate, compared to just one in three who say Sarah Palin is the stronger Vice Presidential candidate.

Virginia released today there were 400,000 new registered voters since 2004, pushing the registered totals to approximately 5M total. This puts VA online to break 70% turnout.

1,716,959 - Bush

1,454,742 - Kerry

Under the highly unscientific assumption that all the Bush voters vote McCain, all the Kerry votes vote Obama, McCain needs 35% of these new 400,000 voters to keep the lead.

But interestingly, VA showed both Kerry and Bush maxed out on the partisan voters. To make up 8% seems unlikely. McCain should win +2/3.

Even if Obama were to win this state, it will be <1.9 points. What I find unbelievable is Sarah Palin’s numbers in a traditional Republican state. Unless they polled exlusively in Fairfax and Richmond.

Back when the unemployment figure came out at 6% I said the economy would be the deciding issue and that McCain should go after the democrats for causing the problem

Little did I know it would get so much worse but the strategy should be the same —the democrats caused this BS

However if the public thinks a corrupt liar like Obama is the answer and can’t see he is a snake oil merchant then we as a country are doomed

They will have severe buyers remorse in the following years but it will be too late by then

The last time VA went Democrat was in 1964

In the past 2 years, VA has snagged itself a Dem for a governor and a liberal senator who beat an incumbent many thought was a potential presidential candidate.

Come Nov, we'll probably loose the second senate seat to Mark Warner.

"A pro-abortion extremist who was colleague with an unrepetent pentagon-bombing 60s radical and who attended a black liberation theology church and considered its race-baiting kook pastor his ‘mentor’ leads a former POW and centrist senator by 6 points in a state known for its military tradition."

Yes, in Northern Virginia and in City of Alexandria, you'd better believe it. Honestly, if every patriotic American doesn't get out there and vote for McCain/Palin... we've GOT to overwhelm the fraud with sheer numbers.

What's the sampling data for this poll?

I do not believe it, particularly given the relative size in crowds that have been coming out...like this huge crowd for Sarah.

McCain needs 35% of these new 400,000 voters to keep the lead.

On average only 55% of these new voters will actually vote.

Yep. A lot of libs have moved into NOVA and have changed the state's voting habits. The area is like Maryland to the north. The south of the state remains conservative.

Every "bitter clinger" in Virginia, PLEASE go vote, drive your neighbor to the poles, etc.

I live in a sea of Obama signs, in the City of Alexandria. I've got a Saul Alinksy community organization down the street. CASA, too. Please, oh, please, all Virginians, please get to the polls on Nov 2.

I've been there. Suburb of DC. And I think that's the case in NOVA. Its a deep hued Blue.

Do you know what the voter registration ratio is in Va? I’d like to know how that relates to the sampling ratio.

One good thing about Virginia is that voters must have picture ID to vote. That puts us in a bit more secure position than places like Ohio

Not that that is foolproof, but it helps
