Little do they realize that if they want to, they can set up their own wire service overnight, and for very little money. Just a password protected blog, and invite a select group of other newspapers and media to join it for free.

They can even use a swap ratio: if you take news, post news. Those with too high a ratio can pay some bucks to help host the website, a tiny amount compared to a typical wire service subscription.

As long as they are reasonably credible, all kinds of news and information groups can be invited in, giving a much broader scope to the news.

Some of the emergent homegrown wire services.
Five of Maine’s daily newspapers plan to begin sharing articles and photographs next week in an effort to combine resources as newspaper revenues decline and reporting staffs shrink. ... And they can credit the story to the reporter and news organization where it originates, rather than to the AP ... Eight newspapers in Ohio this spring began sharing articles. In August, three southern Florida newspapers started swapping stories. The Florida and Ohio deals have reduced the newspapers’ reliance on the AP, the industry’s cooperative news-gathering organization.

Yeah, they can still spike the stuff that doesn’t fit their agenda ... the way they do now. Most of the sheeple won’t know the difference ... the way they don’t now.
