How Catholics Are Judging Obama and the Democrats ( Barf alert! )
time.com ^ | Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 | Amy Sullivan

This year's Al Smith Dinner — the annual gala that raises funds for the Archdiocese of New York and has become an essential social ticket for the city's political and media class — will be remembered as a rare cease-fire moment in the heated 2008 presidential campaign. Exchanging rolled-up shirt sleeves for white ties, John McCain and Barack Obama cracked each other up on topics that usually result in outraged press statements when raised on the campaign trail. "I got my name, Barack, from my father," deadpanned Obama, "and I got my middle name from somebody who obviously didn't think I'd ever run for President."

What has gone largely unnoticed, however, is that the evening marked just the second time in 20 years that both presidential candidates had been invited to attend the gathering of Catholic elites. The event itself is a strictly nonpartisan affair. However, the question of whether the Archdiocese extends an invitation to certain candidates has produced no small amount of political drama in past election years. Obama's presence on the dais at the Waldorf-Astoria is just one sign that this may be the Democrats' best year for Catholic support in decades.

Lets not confuse CINO's with Catholics. And no, Ms. Amy, voting for a pro-abortionist is still sinful in the Catholic Church...the confessional is on the right. As Father John Corapi said on EWTN, "all these pro-abortion Catholic politicians should have been excommunicated a long time ago."

My priest hit this subject hard today and the 10-20% of our congregation whom are backing Obambi were squirming uncomfortably.

“I could never understand how catholics or jews could vote for the Obamanation.”

Well, for the 1000th time, I shall explain it...

there is a HUGE difference in a “Catholic in Name Only” or what we call CINO’s and Catholics...just as there is a HUGE difference in secular Jews or “Jews in Name Only” and Jewish...get it?

And for the record, I don’t know what your religious affiliation is but we Catholics & the Jewish like their religious affiliation to be capitalized...if you don’t mind. LOL

I saw the Archbishop get a rather odd look on his face when Obama quipped about contrary to popular opinion he wasn’t born in a manger. (I’m paraphrasing)

Also, I noticed he referred to NY as a Diocese. Obviously the only homework he’s done on Catholics is how to get their vote.

A pox on all Catholics who vote for Obama. They can’t claim invincible ignorance unless they’ve been living in caves somewhere.

I can’t imagine how Cardinal Egan could’ve allowed Obama to be there, since blatant abortion lovers have not been invited previously. Shame on him. He’ll be dealt with.

The Catholic Council of Illinois just issued their statements for voting Catholics.

http://catholicconferenceofillinois.org/bins/site/ftp/CCIVotefinal.pdf

Snippet:

“There are some things we must never do, because they are so deeply flawed that they are always incompatible with love of God and neighbor.

Such “intrinsically evil” actions can never be justified and must always be rejected and opposed; they must never be supported or condoned.

Examples are the intentional taking of innocent life, as in abortion and euthanasia; direct threats to the sanctity and dignity of human life, such as human cloning and destructive research on human embryos; other assaults on innocent human life and violations of human dignity, such as genocide, torture, racism, and targeting noncombatants in acts of terror or war.

The fact that we must always oppose intrinsically evil acts should also open our eyes to the good we must do, that is, to our positive duty to contribute to the common good and to act in solidarity with those in need.

The right to life, for example, is linked to all other human rights, and all life issues are connected. As Blessed Pope John XXIII wrote, “[Each of us] has the right to life, to bodily integrity, and to the means which are suitable for the proper development of life; these are primarily food, clothing, shelter, rest, medical care, and finally, the necessary social services.” The moral imperative to respond to the needs of our neighbors is universally binding on our consciences.

In preparing to vote with a well-formed conscience, it is important to avoid two temptations:

The first temptation would be to consider all life issues morally equal and thus fail to • see that there is a hierarchy among them.

We must keep first in mind that the direct and intentional destruction of innocent human life from the moment of conception until natural death is always wrong. It is not just one issue among many and must always be opposed. Our support for the sanctity of human life is dishonest if it does not include opposition to abortion.”

Archbishop (Chaput-Denver) criticizes Obama, Catholic allies

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20081019/D93TGS480.html

Snippet:

“Chaput, without getting into much detail, called Obama the “most committed” abortion-rights major-party presidential candidate since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision on abortion in 1973.

“To suggest - as some Catholics do - that Senator Obama is this year’s ‘real’ pro-life candidate requires a peculiar kind of self-hypnosis, or moral confusion, or worse,” Chaput said according to his prepared remarks, titled “Little Murders.”

God bless Archbishop Chaput .. God have mercy on us.

“ain’t religious t’all myself.”

well, I will remember you in my prayers this p.m.

“some walk the walk, some do not.”

and that is exactly the point, JINO’s & CINO’s do NOT “walk the walk.”

“I got my name, Barack, from my father,” deadpanned Obama, “and I got my middle name from somebody who obviously didn’t think I’d ever run for President.”

Obama, if you were truly ashamed of your name following 9-11, you could have legally changed it. And nobody would have blamed you.

The fact that you didn’t, tells me that you’re proud of your Muslim name.

I disagree with the times. This year, since the bishops have been so militant in speaking out about Pelosi, Biden, Obama and abortion issues, will signify a turning of the Catholics toward the pro-life candidate.

Watch and see on election night if this proves true. There is only one vehicle in our parking lot that I have seen with an Obama-Biden sticker on it. (And in the past I have seen more.) Of course, my vehicle may be the only one with McCain-Palin stickers on it. Haven’t checked that out!

Well, we all know what the Left Angeles Times is all about...

And the priests have been hitting the abortion issue HARD during Sunday homilies for weeks now...and I expect they will continue.

I hear the Libs are gonna start a 12 step program after they lose another presidential election. LOL

“The fact that you didn’t, tells me that you’re proud of your Muslim name.”

The fact that he hasn’t speaks volumes about what this clown is all about...all you have to do is look at anyone who spent 20 years attending “Rev” Wrong’s weekly anti-American, Racist diatribes...

This is more wishful thinking by the press. They are trying to create the image that, of course, EVERYONE who’s ANYONE is voting for Obama? I mean, aren’t we all? And what American wants to be left out of what everybody else is doing? How uncool!

In reality, even my rather lefty bishop came out with a statement this weekend saying there is no issue more important than life, and a candidate’s opinion on other things is not the thing upon which Catholics can base their vote. Whenever the priests say this in their homilies, btw, people come up to thank them afterwards, so I think there’s a lot of popular support among Catholics (those who go to Mass, at least) for this view. I don’t think Obama is doing well among Catholics at all.
