'Barack Obama Is a Socialist!'
Earlier in this year's campaign, back when it seemed certain that Hillary Clinton would become the Democratic nominee, I wrote a post titled, "Hillary Clinton is a Socialist!" That article looked at what was then the biggest insult the GOP was leveling at the New York senator. To many of Clinton's detractors, her proposal for universal health care smacked of a Stalinist plot, and provided all the ideological rationale required to oppose her.
Well, of late, Barack Obama has taken over Clinton's dubious title. Now, he's the one accused of being the socialist. You hear it from Sarah Palin and the legion of McCain supporters on blogs like this one. Obama is a socialist, socialism is evil, therefore Obama is evil. Of course, this formulation -- as if cut and pasted from a book by Ann Coulter or Sean Hannity -- leaves out several relevant aspects of the continuum that describes the difference between pure laisse faire capitalism and the Maoist corruption of Karl Marx's worker's collective.
First of all, we need to get over our silly notions of philosophical purity. In no small part, we are, in the United States, living in a system that is beholden to socialist ideas. When we "provide for the common defense," we are stepping in that direction. When we levy taxes to help improve state and federal roads, we're flirting with the red menace. When we regulate pollution, enact child-labor laws, or provide protection for Americans with disabilities, we curtail the ravenous impulses of an unfettered capitalist state in favor of the greater good. Of course, Palin herself was guilty of spreading the wealth when she instituted a much-reviled (by corporations) windfall profits tax that lined the pockets of the residents of her state.

Really? I never knew that!
Of course I was also stunned to find out bears defecate in the woods too...
Hopefully anyone with half a brain knows that. The bigger question is, What has happened in our country to bring us to the point where a radical socialist/communist so close to becoming President of the United States?
no kidding?
What was that line from “The Tea House of the August Moon”?
Share and share alike??? Son, THAT’S COMMUNISM!
Yeah, in the same way that a brick can be "accused" of being a brick
I too personally feel that Communist or Marxist is a closer description, the only thing is in a race, there will be more backlash & outcry of McCarthyism “ if any one dares to call him Mr. C. My 2 cents.
It cannot be taken for granted that people now know what socialism is or understand that its ineluctable consequences are poverty, destitution, totalitarianism and death. A century of experiments has given us incontrovertable empirical proof.
McCain needs to complete the logical chain for the ignorant masses: 1. Obama is a socialist 2. socialism is bad. He’s made solid progress on point 1 but polls look ugly for point 2. Nearly half think socialism would be good. McCain needs to give a thumbnail sketch of the Black Book of Communism to close the deal.
Here’s the “logical chain” that I’ve encountered from ‘rats:
1) Given - I support 0bama
2) Given - I wouldn’t support a Marxist, a Fascist or someone who votes for infanticide
3) Conclusion - 0bama doesn’t support Marxism, Fascism or Infanticide
I think more should be made of the claims of the Communist Manifesto.
Khrushchev, during his visit to the US, prophesied that your grandchildren will be Communists”.
Sadly, that is my experience as well.
I had this experience just yesterday. I cornered a lib with logic and, after several minutes of her arguing the above points, she finally admitted she didn’t care if America went Socialist.

Wow, that's a mighty deep thing to say about Obama.
I hope I got all of these correct.
Aaaaand - a point where so many people like the idea? He's a socialist's socialist, a true Marxist. And his supporters include those who see and don't like that but will vote for him regardless.
