Barack Obama, clarifying Joe Biden's statement that he will face an international crisis if elected, says his running mate "sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes."
The next administration will face international challenges regardless of who is elected president, Barack Obama said Wednesday, rebutting criticism of Joe Biden's statement over the weekend that the Democratic candidate will face a "generated crisis" if elected.
Obama said the key reason the next president will face such threats is because of the damaging policies of the past eight years, and he said he's confident his administration will meet such a test.
"Whoever is the next president is going to have to deal with a whole host of challenges internationally and ... a period of transition in a new administration is always one in which we have to be vigilant," Obama said in Richmond, Va., where he met with a panel of foreign policy and military luminaries.
"We have to be careful. We have to be mindful that as we pass the baton in this democracy that others don't take advantage of it -- that is true, whether it's myself or Senator McCain, it's been true throughout history."
Obama said such challenges would not be unique to an Obama administration, and he tried to re-articulate Biden's statement, suggesting his running mate did not express his point as tactfully as the campaign would have liked.
"I think that Joe sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes," Obama said.
Biden made the comments over the weekend to two fundraising audiences, saying he expects that Obama will face an international challenge early in his presidency if he is elected on Nov. 4.

A ‘generated’ crisis= manufactured crisis?
Powell's comments from Sunday?
Socialist's don't usually need chaos. Why would a super-majority party need a ‘generated crisis?’
Democrats always telegraph their intents, can't keep their mouths shut. Biden got in trouble for his statements.
Something is up.
It doesn't sound like Joe Biden is ready to step in to the President's position on day 1.
Sure Joe Sure!! Don’t You Believe It!!
On January 21st, 2009 the documentary "Torturing Democracy" will air on PBS. It details "how the government set aside the rule of law" in its pursuit of harsh interrogations of suspected terrorists. PBS won't run it nationally until January 21, 2009. Scott Horton suspects that may be because PBS is afraid of political retaliation.
I wonder if this will have any bearing on the January 21/22 remarks powell made. I can see how this sort of "documentary" can inflame many factions - including the left vs right in this country if Obama decides he should prosecute it somehow. The implications are astounding.
I wonder if I can get my 8 year old to write "It's Bush's Fault" for all his test answers until the election, and improve his grades at the same time?
I truly hope this is much ado about nothing.
But the fact of the matter is that these statements were made by Four-Star General and Former Secretary of State Colin Powell and five term United States Senator and Vice President nominee Joe Biden. It's not like we are trying to interpret Nostradamus and if they didn't want to worry the American people they should have keep their mouths shut.
The word Generated is worrisome as well. An overblown documentary, depending on content, could very well generate a crisis.
The word Generated is worrisome and scary as well. An overblown, liberally biased documentary about how our country tortured Muslims could very well generate a crisis -including an attack on this country. An attack that an obama president would see as "just" in light of what the documentary revealed.
I don't think they want to keep their mouths shut.
