Victor Davis Hanson: The Obama Enigma
realclearpolitics.com ^ | October 23, 2008 | Victor Davis Hanson

Lame-duck Republican President Bush's dismal poll ratings have descended to those of Harry Truman's when he left office. The Democratic majority in Congress will probably widen after the election. Republican nominee John McCain has not run a dynamic campaign. Gen. Colin Powell, George Bush's former secretary of state, has now enthusiastically endorsed Barack Obama.

The country is in two unpopular wars -- amid the worst financial panic of the last 80 years. Not since prophet of change and newcomer Jimmy Carter ran against Gerald Ford (post Watergate and the lost Vietnam war) have voters been so eager for a shake-up.

Why then is the charismatic Barack Obama not quite yet a shoo-in?

Easy. Voters apparently still don't know who Obama is, or what he wants to do -- and so are still not altogether sure that Obama is the proper antidote to George Bush. After more than a year of campaigning, he still remains an enigma.

"America could elect either the most far left or the most unknown presidential candidate in its history"

We better pray to God that this guy is not elected POTUS!

It ain’t over, Kelly. I’ve got a feeling that when a lot of voters get in the old voting booth, they’ll be pulling the lever for Mac and not BO.

I’ve already voted. Simplest decision in my life!

Viva McCain/Palin!!!

I promise to support the Obama administration. In exactly the same way the Democrats have supported the Bush administration.

Obama might not be far-left. But he is a psychologically disturbed narcissist with a severe racial complex. That makes him dangerous. Like Hitler.

If that's enthusiasm, I'd hate to see him depressed.

There’s no mystery as to who Obama is - he’s a third-World socialist. The news media just won’t say so.

I think that Obama’s emergence is directly related to the poor performance (deficit spending, prescription drugs program, No child left behind, etc) of the past Republican presidents and Congress and their ignoring of the conservatives.

Obama would be bad enough, but it looks as if we will have an unknown number of years of Pelosi and that idiot in the Senate. I think the most significant happening would be another Democrat House and Senate.

President Bush did nothing about the illegal immigrant problem. Now we may see blanket amnesty. Pray that we don't get a Democrat President, House, and Senate.

To conclude, this country once more has conclusively demonstrated (to the world) that we (the politicians and the financiers) know nothing about running a large, complex financial system. All the financial modelers are demonstrating the same skill level as the climate modelers.

I love Jeff Head’s Revolutionary design.

May we need a slogan, like:

“Walk softly, and carry a big plunger!”
