There aren’t any candidates involved, but a statewide measure that would eliminate same-sex couples’ right to marry has started a political sign war in Scotts Valley.

There aren’t any candidates involved, but a statewide measure that would eliminate same-sex couples’ right to marry has started a political sign war in Scotts Valley.

More than 50 “Yes on 8” signs have been destroyed and stolen in Scotts Valley, said Jenny Wood, local “Yes on 8” campaign ZIP code supervisor.

At the same time, many “No on 8” signs have been taken or slashed, said Glen Schaller, the Santa Cruz campaign manager for “No on Proposition 8.”

Wood estimates that between 50 and 75 signs advertising a “yes” vote on Proposition 8 have been taken or destroyed in Scotts Valley since she and others started putting them up Sunday, Oct. 12.

Despite reporting the damage to the police, the culprits are at large.

“We don’t know any specifics,” Wood said. “We’re assuming it’s people opposed to Proposition 8.”

Schaller said there have been many reports of “No on 8” signs being taken from yards in Scotts Valley.

“I’ve had over a dozen reports in the last two days,” said Schaller on Tuesday.

Both campaigns have vowed to replace any signs that are stolen or damaged. Wood erected “yes” signs along Mt. Hermon Road, La Madrona Drive, Kings Village Road, Scotts Valley Drive and Skypark Drive.

In the following days, all the signs had been destroyed, stolen, knocked over or moved to a less visible location. Wood replaced the signs, and again they were ransacked. Some were ripped, and others were marked with black pen.

Similar things happened to “No on 8” signs around town, and bumper stickers have even been peeled off vehicles, Schaller said.

Scotts Valley police have received reports from both sides and warn that it is considered a theft to take a campaign sign off any property.

Proposition 8 is a highly contested measure that, if it passes, it would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry by adding a phrase to California’s constitution.

Campaigns for and against the measure have sprouted up across the state, and both campaigns are heavily funded, resulting in television commercials and campaigning statewide.

The MSM starts out by lying about Prop. 8 eliminating the right of same sex couples to marry! Such a right NEVER existed in California before elitist liberal activist judges imposed it over the express wishes of 61% of Californians!

Its a constitutional amendment. That's why the Left is throwing everything at Prop. 8 since if they can't keep same sex marriage alive in California, its going to remain a curious Massachussetts-Connecticut oddity.

Anybody else think we may need a new law for defacing, destroying, or stealing political signs?

Perhaps a fine of $10,000 for each act (or each sign) would stop the offenders.

If this keeps up, we can all kiss free speech goodbye.

Believe it or not, someone stole our McCain/Palin sign and replaced it with a Yes on Prop 8 sign.

I’d prefer both signs. In the mean time, we’re leaving the Prop 8 sign were it is.

If everyone who cares about this issue could go to http://www.protectmarriage.com/ and donate accordingly.

I just got an email from them that says if they dont get $3.5 in donations, they are going to lose.

I guess their opponents just had a Hollywood fundraiser with Streisand, Ellen, Mary J. Bliged, etc. and the NO clan just just raised around 10 million. The No adds are already starting to flood the state.
