I never got asked for ID in NY either. However, in our small town everyone knows everyone else and the discussion inevitably gets around to this subject and everyone there thinks that showing ID should be mandatory.
I don’t think I’ve ever been asked for an ID to vote. We live in a small town in Taxachusetts (<12000).
