OENIX (Reuters) In the final stretch to the presidential election, more than three quarters of likely Hispanic voters say they support Democrat Barack Obama over Republican John McCain, a study found.
The Univision/Reuters/Zogby poll released on Tuesday said that 78 percent of a sample of 1,016 Latino likely voters favored Sen. Obama, with 13 percent supporting McCain, an Arizona senator.
The poll, which was conducted between October 30 and November 2, found that 54 percent of respondents said the economy and jobs were the most important issue in deciding who to vote for, followed by health care and immigration, with 12 percent and 11 percent respectively.
Hispanics make up 15 percent of the U.S. population and 9 percent of the electorate, and could be a critical swing voting bloc in battleground states in the U.S. Southwest as well as Florida on Tuesday.
In 2004, President George W. Bush won about 40 percent of the Latino vote -- a Republican record -- when he beat Democrat John Kerry. But opinion polls show Republican standing among Hispanics has since been hurt by a shrill national debate over immigration reform and a worsening economy.
A survey by Zogby International last month found that 70 percent of Hispanic likely voters favored Obama, with 21 percent favoring McCain.

Another permanent underclass — perfect.
And just wait until the O legalizes about 12-20M illegals. They will become as reliable a voting block as the other underclass.
From one of my buddies in Pennsylvania !
“Rich, Woody just reported that his rural polling place was swarmed for the first time with all the Philly trash from the government run free housing project for the first time. Straight Dem Im sure.”
sorry but that reeks of total bullsheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
Perhaps it stems from a dream for a caudillo who will rescue them from the poverty and misery they've suffered.
We'll see the same thing happening in the States as large segments of the electorate deliberately choose to foul their own nests.
I wonder if they know he wants to throw his aunt out of the country!
Well....there’s a shocker!
I guess all those Mexicans that Jorge let over the border came home to roost!.....
I find that interesting since it’s typically known that Hispanics do not have much love for blacks and vice versa, at least here in Lost Angeles. Maybe it’s just about party loyalty and they’d vote for a burrito filled with donkey dung because it was the democrat nominee.
If anyone thinks we have a serious illegal immigrant problem now....just what until socialist Obama puts the welcome mat out.....
They aren't going to tell a pollster that.
My daughters (3rd and 4th grade) attend a school with a high percentage of hispanics, ok— they are Mexicans- and these kids told my daughters that McCain said if anyone complains about the Mexicans he is going to send them back to Mexico....
yes— these kids hear this crapt from somewhere!
this is so patently false is is beyond laughable- it is outright infuriating...
Obama is a filled with hate and rage, and spreads it...he is no bridge to healing, progress, or unity....he is horrific not just politically— but for our nation’s unity as well.....
What Latinos did they poll? I’m Latino, I never recieved a call! This poll is garbage. Let me tell you, I have Latino friends (mostly white-collar) that are hard core Democrats, that see the 0bama for who he is. I had one friend tell me he was “too liberal”, this coming out of the mouth of a staunch Latino Democrat! It’s not the newbies 0bama has to try to win over, it’s the typical Democrat in all groups.
Besides, McCain is part of the pro-amnesty crowd. If these Latinos are upset at Republicans over it, then voting McCain should be no problem. It’s an asinine assumption by Yahoo news (or whoever their source writer was)
There is no way this stat is true.
I’M FROM A CUBAN/AMERICAN FROM NEW JERSEY A LOT OF THE PEOPLE THAT I KNOW ARE NOT VOTING FOR OBAMA, I REALLY DON’T KNOW HOW THEY COME UP WITH THIS NUMBERS. I SEE IT LIKE THIS DOMINICANS, PUERTO RICAN A SOUTH AMERICAN ARE VOTING FOR OBAMA, NOW COLOMBIANS CUBANS AND SALVADORIANS ARE VOTING FOR MCAIN.
I’m a nrewbie. Just voted for Country First.
This Hispanic Exit Poll sure is bad news. But I’m not that surprised. Considering we never knew how to keep them with us. Some comments on this site were sure to put them off.
#1 Hispanics mostly due to their life experiences tell me they HATE blacks.
Yet again, on the flip side...
#2 Many Hispanics are first generation poor and the Democrats give a few things away to the poor to buy the vote.
Dems gain power through government employment, state employment, preferred minority contracts, food stamps, the welfare and Hispanics vote selfishly what serves their direct needs versus thinking about what effects the country.
Some good news is they hardly remember to vote.
I am married to a a wonderful Hispanic woman and have heard from her whole Hispanic side of the family (which are all nice people).
Those who are citizens vote naturally liberal for being poor and they hate blacks who they all most all have had bad personal experiences with for some reason.
Often living in poor places near blacks, many have suffered crimes from them.
My wife was robbed a couple of times by blacks before, so there is no love their for politicians from churches who hate Whites and Jews.
They are conservative in principles, but there is a mental disconnect in voting their ethics in the booth.
When I discuss it with them we both agree that 2+2=4, I go and vote based on the total 4, but they add 2+2=4 and go vote based on a number 3 because some relative who is liberal or government employed told them to and they believed them.
That is how it goes.
It's complicated.
They feel the most left out of what they see as a Black/liberal vs. White/establishment referendum.
Another liberal media attempt at voter suppression.
