Next Up for Sarah Palin: US Senator?
Kansas City Star ^ | Yael T. Abouhalkah

Sarah Palin could wind up in Washington serving with John McCain after all -- in the U.S. Senate.

Here's the scenario making the rounds of arch-conservative groups strongly in the Palin camp:

After their expected loss today, Palin goes back to being governor of Alaska and McCain remains a U.S. Senator (his term ends in 2011).

But Ted Stevens, the Alaskan Republican senator convicted recently of corruption, is still up for re-election as of today.

Here's where Palin and the Senate come in:

If Stevens wins, he could either step down on his own (unlikely, given his pugnacious personality) or the U.S. Senate could expel him in 2009.

Then, Alaska would hold an election to choose a new senator.

And, in this version at least, the oh-so-popular Palin would run and win a seat in the U.S. Senate

I don’t know how likely it is, but it would be fine with me. Get rid of a blight on the party and give Sarah a chance to get Washington experience. Couldn’t be better.

She should be the front-runner in 2012.

Sarah is better off as a Governor. Governors actually do stuff.

I don't see her going to Washington. She's happy being Governor Of Alaska. She will probably appoint a Republican to fill Stevens seat until a special election can be held.

She needs to stay away from the Senate. If she becomes a Senator, she will be tainted by it’s filth. She needs to govern Alaska, as a good Conservative, then come out swinging for 2012.

Being a sitting US Senator would shut Noonan, Will, Frum etc. up in a hurry.

Over time they will come to love her like we do!

I can go with Sarah as a Senator, after all, having a sensible, beautiful, intelligent woman will go down well given the two East-Coast beyotches just elected (Shaheen and Hagan, and sad to say, the last now represents me, in some illusory but unavoidable fashion).

What I want to know is who is going to be appointed to fill Biden’s seat, now that he is both Vice President and Senator from Delaware?

As much as I would like to see her on the national stage, staying in Alaska is what is better for Sarah and her family at this time. They have a grandchild due around Christmas! Can you imagine how exciting that will be for them?

Mrs. Palin could appoint herself, but IMHO, she should stay on as governor.

One of her greatest appeals is that she is not beholding to special interests in Washington. If she becomes a senator, my fear is she will compromise her standards like the rest of these scum.

If Stevens steps down now, she could appoint herself to fill the remainder of Steven’s term. At least, that’s how it works here. They wouldn’t even need an special election!

Go, Sarah!

Sarah is wonderful wherever she is and whatever she chooses to do. Thank God and the great state of Alaska for her and her family.

She is the front runner. Everyone else is a distant second except for Mittens. His “Obama is not a socialist” performance the other morning combined with his staff’s knifing campaign against Sarah finished him.

No!

Dear Gov Palin,

Please stay in Alaska. In the post mortem of this election (from the GOP point of view) you and you alone were the reason that Sen McCain did not lose by 20 points. It was only because of you that many conservatives actually came out to vote.

Stay in Alaska. Continue being a fab Gov. Continue being a super fab Mom and Wife. Create a power base there. Start planning your 2012 run now. Realistically here is how you will have to do it.

1. Help the GOP at the national level in 2010 by campaigning and raising cash for Senate and House races. Start this process in January of 2010 and with God’s grace, in Nov 2010, the GOP will add Senate and House seats and you will be credited for it. Also, since you will be campaigning for your re-election, this will blend in with your schedule

2. In Dec of 2010 announce an exploratory committee for a run to the Presidency. Start raising unbelievable amounts of cash.

3. Hire Karl Rove for his expertise on fund raising. Whatever you may feel about him, he is unequalled on the GOP side on fund raising.

4. Get on a permanent campaign mode from January of 2011.

5. Travel to the UK, Iraq, Germany etc and meet with their leaders (even if they are second and thirds in command)

6. Raise nearly 100 million by January of 2012. You will need it to build a phenomenal organization in Iowa, NH, SC and a bunch of other early states.

7. Publish a book with all your Conservative ideas and make sure that it becomes the benchmark of all your speeches

8. Once you win the nomination, go HARD into fund raising and campaigning mode. If you thought that these last 2 months were hectic, you aint seen nothing yet

9. Nominate a Veep early. One of the biggest mistakes Senator McCain made was to wait till just before the convention to nominate you. Big mistake.

10. Go win 2012 and make us proud!

We love you Sarah Palin. You are awesome!

Actually, Governor Palin would be best served by fulfilling her role as Governor. Serving two or six more years as Governor would broaden her executive experience, something expected of Presidential candidates. A Senate seat does not broaden executive experience.

I would urge her to travel abroad on trade junkets from time to time, in order to gain more international experience. I would also suggest she find other ways to enhance that portion of her resume.

I would also suggest she help other candidates across the nation in 2010. It would help her develop some chits for future use.

By 2012 or even 2016, she will have become a seasoned formidable political adversary.

What's worrying me will there be enough of America left for Sarah Palin to be in the Senate after Obama, the Masquerader does his thing?
