You nailed it.

Excellent.

We would have won if we had dropped down the Obama vote just a big in the black and Hispanic communities.

These groups are not naturally Dem. They could become Republican, if we reached out to them (and not in a capitulation way, but genuinely work with them to hear their concerns).

I like your post.

We need to take ideas like yours, distill and refine them; and then take back our party.

Exactly. Remember how Michels got removed from house minority leader after 1992 loss and we became the ‘voters’ party with new leadership? That cannot happen until a disaster like this.

very well said. politics is changing as is our country. Our communication system is circa 2004, not 2008. The Dems will have the Obama system in place for the next couple decades, so we need to match it.

exactly. another excellent point.

I interviewed my rep for the newspaper since he came to town to talk to kids at a school. He said we need to take ownership of the fact that we are all Americans and lead that charge to define diversity on our terms.

He was right, and I just hope the GOP does it.

Good point.....Obama did a much better job with using e-mail, text, social networking etc. than McCain.

The Democrats already got the Hispanic vote in 2008 by 2 to 1. The got the Blacks by 19 to 1. They got the Jewish voters by 3 to 1.

That doesn’t leave a lot of room to spare when all you have left to go for is straight white Christians. It’s a testament to the hard work the GOP did in 2000 and 2004 that they amazingly managed to win twice. I expect Obama will run for re-election in 2012, and I certainly don’t think the minority numbers will be get easier by themselves.

The GOP must develop and insert an inner city/suburban organization capable of establishing rapport and trust with Lamont the Plumber in Mitchellville, MD and Luisa the Cleaning Business Lady in Woodbridge, VA. A daunting challenge to be sure.

IMHO, GOP must also start putting up serious candidates for secretaries of state throughout the 50 (or is it 57) states PLUS getting its people elected at the county level as commissioners of elections. Voter fraud did not start in 2008, and it sure won’t go away by itself. The time to go at it is NOW.

Yours might be among the top 10 posts on these threads since the election. It is right on so many counts. First you identify the demographic wall Republicans must climb. Second, you point out the folly of attempting to do this on white votes alone. Third, you identify the predictable failure of a top down policy. Fourth, you outline a proposal which just might work.

I confess that I believe that such a policy will find much more fertile ground in the Hispanic community than among African Americans whom I regard to be willfully obdurate and benighted by the likes of Reverend Wright. I do not believe that the Hispanic community has been so distorted by such charlatans. Perhaps that is my prejudice showing. I believe community organization on behalf of conservatism should begin with Hispanics.

It sounds like RC is projecting his populism. Conservatism does favor and indeed fosters percolating wealth up. It is called equality of opportunity. The redistribution of wealth which you favor is called equality of outcomes. I take your point in one of your posts to the effect that when the folks lose faith in the fairness of the system, the system is doomed. I do not think we should confuse faith in the rule of law with faith in equality of outcomes.

All things are a question of degree, at least there comes a time when excessive commitment to any ideology so distorts the system so as to destroy it. Of course we have to help those people who are unable to cope. Indifference to the plight of the unfortunate can be caused by excessive commitment to ideology and must be guarded against. But that is different from punishing the rich for their wealth. That is different from regarding the poor as noble and the rich as ignoble. That is different from setting class against class which is as vile as setting race against race.

I take your point that conservatives must be cautious lest they offend through condescension or, more likely, the appearance of condescension.

A lot of hispanics are decent and hard working. I agree they would be a good group to go after. The blacks not so much.

BTW, NFB is kinda one of my heroes. Gov’t can’t even begin to insure equality of outcomes. Even commies couldn’t do that. Or Mao or Pol Pot, etc. BUT, the system has to be fair, and be percieved as fair, and be something where one has the ability to better themselves to be dynamic and fair.

Floors need to be established to make sure everybody gets at least the minimum for a decent, livable existence. Minimum wages should be livable wages. Of course there will be those who soar above that. Some will be born above that with silver spoons in their mouths.

BUT, something is wrong when some dweeb like Fuld makes a million dollars a week.

Hey Parsi ... when your new leftist leader has you dependent on government for all your needs - and takes your individual freedom away - your freedom to move up and make something of your crummy life - please, dont come groveling back here. This experiment called trickle up was defeated long ago, because it is a failed social experiement. Go live in Cuba and get a taste of it yourself.

I think what I’ll do is talk to my new leftist leader and see if he will put me in charge of the GOP and Paleo-con re-education camps.

Let’s see, I’ll play Michael Moore movies every day with forced attendance, make all the prisoners, excuse me, students, wear Ol’ Crusty looking uniforms, and the only library priveleges there’ll be is to go to DU and read every post every day which no reply priveleges.

Then, on Sunday, I’ll give each pris....uh student a virtual minimum wage pay check and set of virtual real life bills and make them try to pay them with any deficit to be applied to the funds they checked in with. Nobody gets out until they are broke which won’t take long.

OMG I’m devious.....

parsy, who is just itching to get at it...

Just remember, it wasn’t all that long ago that the Conservatives in Canada were down to 2 seats in Parliament. Now they are firmly back in power.

I appreciate your kind words.

I understand that what I proposed yesterday is a long-term strategy. Unfortunately, it would be nice to get back in the game a little sooner than that. In the short-term, I think we can still be competitive already in 2012.

The election of Barack Obama as President in 2008 is not the last societal and political barrier to fall. For obvious reasons, the Democrats will not provide an opportunity in 2012 for the election of their candidate to be first female POTUS. I expect the GOP will provide the voters exactly such an opportunity in 2012.

I expect that Gov. Palin will soon become Senator Palin. I expect, following in a similar pattern as Senator Obama, she will spend the next two years conspicuously filibustering and voting against Democratic legislation, at which point she will announce her campaign for President. I expect she will be a walking ATM machine for the GOP, and will work closely with conservative think tanks to redefine their 2012 strategy. While retaining her solid conservative credentials, they will probably also attempt to carve out wedge, “glass ceiling” issues to exploit her gender identification and split off a portion of the female minority population that went almost exclusively to Obama in 2008. Remember, Obama carried African American women 96-3 in 2008. There is likely to be remorse, or at a minimum, at least somewhat diminished enthusiasm the second time around.
