[Louisiana Governor] Jindal rises in GOP's next generation

Ousted from power, party now turns to fresh faces

BATON ROUGE -- Gov. Bobby Jindal is among a short list of Republicans whose political stars stand to rise as the party looks for new ideas and leadership in the wake of Tuesday's landmark Democratic victories.

With the GOP out of power in both the White House and Congress for the first time since 1992-94, analysts expect attention to shift to the states, where many Republican governors remain popular with constituents despite the national repudiation of presidential standard-bearer John McCain and the GOP losses in Congress.

"This party is going to take on a new face and new leadership and younger leadership and he would seem to fit that bill pretty well," Jennifer Duffy, a senior editor with the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, said of Jindal. "Right now it's a party without a leader, so there's a great void to be filled."

I just advocated for Jindal on the Palin thread. I think the Republican party has to reach out to minorities and Asians are the perfect fit. Stable marriages, high respect for education, and they work hard. That is the blueprint for personal responsibility. The excellent book ‘No Excuses’ about the racial gap in learning between blacks and whites makes the point that Asian parents do not think that either environmental factors or genetics are barriers to success. They expect all their children to work hard and get good grades. Let’s reach out.

Plus Jindal is Catholic (I'm Protestant), and could reach that crucial block of swing voters.

I believe so. Which is funny because the second I saw Obama won, my mind instantly jumped to Jindal (and although I have a political science degree, I am not a party expert)... its great to see I am not the only one.

Palin/Jindal 2012

Sarah is a far better communicator who can touch & energize the core of conservatives. She is simply a better leader to voice the conservative mantra.

Let’s concentrate on the house and senate first and stop trying to force people into the white house. Jindal will run when and if he wants to.

I like Palin myself, but this is what we have to do now. We have to nudge/push/shove these old roosters out of the party & get some youth in there! It’s way past time. There are several up and comings in the party that need to replace the stale old ones that are singing the same old tired tune. This is our mission, and we have 4 years to accomplish it. We also have the mission of getting more of our people in congress in two years.

Let’s roll up our sleeves, we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us!

As an American Asian myself, I couldn’t agree more. Asians are pretty traditional too,(George Takei notwithstanding). What Asians lack in numbers (as far as population goes), they make up in education, income and buying power.

So far I like what I’ve seen with Jindal. As much as I like Sarah, the national spotlight has not been kind and unless she grows a lot in the next 3 years, I think she’ll fade from the national scene. My biggest fear when McCain picked her was that she was still a bit too green and that the press would destroy whatever great political future was in her cards (as I truly believed was in her cards) before she even got a chance.

I’m hoping I’m proven wrong, but to this point it’s fallen into place exactly as I feared.

Still, I think we have to focus on 2010 first. We need gains in 2 years!
