I wonder what exactly the “community service” consist of? My guess, is it’s something we’ve never seen before.

We've seen it before. Register all as democrats.

Ask not what your government can do for you, ask what you can do for your government.

“I’m saying only local school boards should make such decisions - not the feds. Some have requirements today for community service in their senior year, but not too many hours are involved. I’ve seen the kids helping at the animal shelter, food bank, church outreach programs, etc. It’s no big deal for them for it may be only 30 or so hours and they seem to really enjoy what they are doing.”

Huh? So, a straight “A” student may not graduate and realize her dreams.

Charitable work was historically the domain of religious bodies and their congregations, and such work was never mandated, conditioned or forced upon people. The government, be it the federal, local or a school board has no right to mandate anyone’s service as a condition for anything. You preach a willingness to subject not only you, but me and mine to servitude and slavery.

You won’t find many here who’ll tolerate your nonesense.

And I thought we had done away with conscription as well.

Actually not, it's just "on standby". Men still have to register and the whole structure to draft them is in place, mostly "staffed" by reservists without a better slot, who would be activated when and if.

Can anyone verify if this website is real? It could be a scam. I would hate to get burned by citing it.

Real as a heart attack. You even help pay for it, if you pay federal taxes that is.

It's a .gov site, and you can't get one of those unless you are part of the government.

My kids had to work in HS to afford cars and insurance. They don’t have time for feel good BS.

The BS will be mandatory. The Cars and Insurance will Have To Go. They aren't Green anyway. Although they might issue "carbon credits" for the BS.

So why can’t your child opt out? Is this the Soviet Union?

Of course not. But it soon will be the United Socialist States of America. USSA.

The government generated "Economic Crisis" will be used, has already been used, to increase government size, control, and power.

“My daughter noted as well that this diminishes the efforts of those who do volunteer work out of the kindness of their hearts and their desire to serve.”

Just like it diminishes the efforts of those who work to support those that don’t. Give your pride and joy an “atta girl” from me.

I’m not sure what “WOLVERINES” means,

It's from the movie "Red Dawn".

"Wolverines" was the name of the "Local Sports Collective" (aka high school sports teams) in a small moutain town invaded by Cubans and Russians. The name was then adopted by former participants in the sports collective who "took to the hills" and gave the Ruskies what the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan gave them)

Apparently there is a remake in the works

Wonder how long before we get a “stadium incident”?

Need some kind of crisis to justify putting the new and improved “Assault Weapons Ban” on the very fast track to passage. Although with the incoming Congress being what it will be, that might not be required. But however it gets passed, it will make the original look like mild restrictions.

Question for you legal types out there: Is the constitutions requirement to "raise and support armies" the reason the draft was exempted from the wording of the 13th amendment?

Article I Section 8 of the Constitution includes among the powers of Congress:

To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;

And the United States Code defines the militia as "The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard."

The "draft" is purely and simply the use of Art I sect 8 to call members of the militia into service. Hence the real name "Selective Service", i.e. the selection of individual members of the Milita for being called into federal service.

Schools that have community service programs around here require they be after school, are flexible allowing the kids to pick interest areas and then report on the work they did. It is well received, they learn to relate with adults, to communicate with others in the world, and generally learn how good it is to be a giver, and not always be on the receiving end with a hand out for more.

One neighbor teen was tutoring Hispanic primary and elementary kids at his church. He was not sure what he wanted to do after graduation. Now is enthused and wants to be a teacher.

But my college student doesn’t have a mortgage, her insurance is covered from her family, and we make too much to get any credits toward her education. Far as I’m concerned, she can take those REQUIRED community hours and tell the government to pound sand. They hold very little power over us since we receive very little in benefits.

It won't happen over night, it will be a long process of evolving the society toward govt. control as outlined. In the late interim, you "independent" types will be labeled and insulted and jeered like the independent farmer "kulak class" in the early Soviet Union. And we know what happened to them.
