Actually in this case, I don't think he lied. This "brilliant," Ivy-educated scholar is ... an ignoramus when it comes to American history.
And -have you ever noticed? - he's not funny. Mr. Camelot II doesn't have a sense of humor.
It's pretty obvious his advisors have told him he needs to occasionally make fun of himself (rather than mocking others all the time).
But whenever he has to deliver a self-deprecating joke, as he did at the Al Smith dinner, you can tell he can hardly spit it out.
