The night we waved goodbye to America... our last best hope on Earth
DailyMail Online ^ | November 10, 2008 | Peter Hitchens

Anyone would think we had just elected a hip, skinny and youthful replacement for God, with a plan to modernise Heaven and Hell – or that at the very least John Lennon had come back from the dead.

The swooning frenzy over the choice of Barack Obama as President of the United States must be one of the most absurd waves of self-deception and swirling fantasy ever to sweep through an advanced civilisation. At least Mandela-worship – its nearest equivalent – is focused on a man who actually did something.

I really don’t see how the Obama devotees can ever in future mock the Moonies, the Scientologists or people who claim to have been abducted in flying saucers. This is a cult like the one which grew up around Princess Diana, bereft of reason and hostile to facts.

Nothing we don't already know. But a well written and reasoned view from across the pond. I assume there's some relationship between Peter & Christopher Hitchens.

Brothers. One religious and one an atheist. Both good writers.

Obama’s election is very scary. The author is right — you will see the disintegration of America’s soul.

Look into my eyes, what do you see?
Cult of personality
I know your anger, I know your dreams
Ive been everything you want to be
Im the cult of personality
Like mussolini and kennedy
Im the cult of personality
Cult of personality
Cult of personality

Neon lights, a nobel prize
The mirror speaks, the reflection lies
You dont have to follow me
Only you can set me free
I sell the things you need to be
Im the smiling face on your t.v.

I could jump up and down and scream for John Lennon, but I never would’ve elected him!

I hope Obama meets Lincoln’s ghost in the hall and has an mi.

Thanks, I had of course heard of Christopher but not Peter before, as Cs’ articles have frequently appeared on FR; though not so much of late. C has appeared to drift all over the place over time; I have no such reference with P. I thot this article was nicely written, certainly because I greatly agree with it, but well written on its face.

Let’s just hope BHO is just at the most a one termer as our country has had to suffer before. The bums have been thrown out before. In my usual optimism this is what I imagine.

I remember being called all sorts of names here at Free Republic six months ago when I warned that Obama would be the Democratic version of Ronald Reagan, that he would win in a landslide reminiscent of Reagan’s 1980 spanking of Jimmy Carter. Most conservatives here called me nuts, crazy, high, etc, buying into the Clinton argument that Obama couldn’t win the general election. Most conservatives were already so myopic in their view of Obama that they didn’t see the groundswell that was building for his campaign.

And we didn’t lose this election on November 4th, we lost it when the GOP was gullible enough to settle for RINO as the party’s candidate. John McCain is no more a true conservative Republican than Jimmy Carter. And as evidenced by his campaign staff’s pathetic handling of the general election and its aftermath, McCain cares for nothing except his political career and no one except his own self. He’d sell his mother if it meant career advancement.

from a brits POV about America, from the article:
Suspicious of welfare addiction, feeble justice and high taxes, totally committed to preserving its own national sovereignty, unabashedly Christian in a world part secular and part Muslim, suspicious of the Great Global Warming panic, it was unique.

These strengths had been fading for some time, mainly due to poorly controlled mass immigration and to the march of political correctness. They had also been weakened by the failure of America’s conservative party – the Republicans – to fight on the cultural and moral fronts.

They preferred to posture on the world stage. Scared of confronting Left-wing teachers and sexual revolutionaries at home, they could order soldiers to be brave on their behalf in far-off deserts. And now the US, like Britain before it, has begun the long slow descent into the Third World. How sad. Where now is our last best hope on Earth?

0bama sure seemed like the longest of long shots to me. I saw the groundswell developing but like 99% of us on FR, I didn’t see it coming to any fruition.

In no way was I happy with McCain as a candidate. In short, I thought he was Bob Dole redux, maybe even worse.

I don’t know if I would make those comments about McCain but frankly, he never interested me enough to check him out in any great depth. Perhaps that’s the bottom line story of the election anyway. I still don’t consider him as selfish as you portray, but there’s not much use in quibbling about shades of uselessness. We’re stuck with the guy we’re stuck with, and I don’t mind telling you I’m sick over it.

...we didn’t lose this election on November 4th, we lost it when the GOP was gullible enough to settle for RINO as the party’s candidate.

We'd lost it long before that.

The GOP lost this election when they previously reviewed the GOP Primary process in each of the 50 States and decided NOT to make ALL GOP Primary elections "closed" primaries.

THAT is a sucking chest wound that STILL hasn't been addressed.

I've already written the Vice Chair of CAGOP about it. Residents of other "open GOP primary" States should do likewise, and keep applying increasing heat until the primaries are closed.

Will not happen. When over 50% of the populace is on some sort of government subsistance, they will NOT vote out those who benefit their well being. Look at GM asking for government assistance. They need help because, they, like the government promised goodies to retirees, who are living longer and longer, full pay and benefits for NOT WORKING. And we have no money to buy a bigger, better, faster car from them when ours is still running fine. I can only imagine the protests when GM collapses and those employees not become wards of the state. State bennies are not quite what they are used to.
