Presidential Historian: Obama Could Permanently Ban ANWR Drilling

Still more than two months from his inauguration, President-elect Barack Obama has started promoting his policies and naming some of his advisers. And according to one historian, he could be developing a plan to permanently block drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Douglas Brinkley, a noted presidential historian and professor at Rice University in Houston, told viewers of CNN’s Nov. 11 “Lou Dobbs Tonight” how Obama could change ANWR’s designation from a National Wildlife Refuge to a National Monument. That power was granted to presidents by the Antiquities Act of 1906, and would not require any approval from Congress.

“I think what they’re trying to do is in the Obama administration, start pointing out some clear divot spots where they’re going to deviate from the Bush administration – things like Guantanamo, things that, ‘No, we are not going to be for drilling around parks,’” Brinkley said.

A later President could undo it. So could Congress (not likely at the moment).

“The U.S. bought Alaska from Russia in October 1867 for 7.2 million dollars, or two cents per acre,”

and we said - hey, let’s buy this huge chunk of land and make sure we NEVER do anything with it!

We needed to do something about those executive orders a long time ago. While it looks to be fun while one of our Presidents is in there (but sometimes “not”, too) — it’s definitely no fun when looking at the opposition and them saying that they’re going to run this whole country by Executive Orders and scrap the Congress... LOL...

Unless the Antiquities Act amended the Constitution, it cannot bind subsequent Congresses or Presidents.

Douglas Brinkley, incidentally, is a shitty excuse for a historian.

So - if it’s true what they say it takes 10-15 years to get oil once all systems are go - we could add 4 to 8 years to that now.

NO!!

Think about it, it would require that the US lasts forever which he also can't guarantee.

From Wikipedia: The Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act requires Congressional ratification of the use of the Antiquities Act in Alaska for withdrawals of greater than 5,000 acres.

As we have seen, there is no such thing as "permanent" when it comes to executive orders (directed exclusively towards the executive branch of government).

WE're not a banana republic yet.

“Douglas Brinkley, incidentally, is a shitty excuse for a historian.”

I don’t recall which program I heard it on yesterday, but they played a tape of Michael Beshloff (another historian). He claimed Obama has the highest IQ of any president and his IQ is off the charts.....but he had NO idea what Obama’s IQ is!

[snip]Exhibit 2. After that stupid comment, Beshloff goes on in the interview and claims multiple times that “Obama’s IQ is off the charts”, and that he is the “smartest President that we’ve ever had”. Finally, after the 3rd or 4th time that he said Obama’s IQ is “off the charts”, Imus asks him what Obama’s IQ was… which he ofcourse couldn’t answer, because nobody knows what Obama’s IQ is… he’s never disclosed that! A point that Beshloff reluctantly conceded to Imus. Moron.

Come to think of it, what do we really know about Obama’s intellectual achievements? As far as I know, he’s never released his transcripts from any of his years in the multiple schools he attended. We don’t know how he, as self described “druggie”, got accepted into Columbia. Nor do we know how he was accepted into Harvard law. Nor do we know how his grades were when he was there… the Obama drones in the media just want us to accept that this guy is the smartest man to walk the face of the earth. Evidence of that? We don’t need no stinking evidence man…
