Secretary of State Hillary Clinton? It's Being Considered
ABC News ^ | Nov. 13, 08 | Martha Raddatz, Jake Tapper and Z. Byron Wolf

Posted on 11/13/2008 9:10:01 PM PST by cdchik123

ABC News’ Martha Raddatz, Jake Tapper and Z. Byron Wolf report: Sen. Hillary Clinton, who was President-elect Barack Obama’s leading rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, is being considered for the job of secretary of state in the Obama administration, sources with knowledge of the transition process tell ABC News.

Discussions about Clinton, D-N.Y., being asked to accept the post are "very serious," an Obama source says.

Asked about the reports on the Cabinet post and another report that Hillary Clinton went to Obama’s home base of Chicago today, senior Hillary Clinton adviser Philippe Reines said, "Any speculation about cabinet or other administration appointments is really for President-elect Obama's transition team to address."

Pushed on whether she physically went to Chicago, Reines said only that she had no public schedule today.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., has been considered a leading contender for the post. But last week, ABC News’ chief Washington correspondent George Stephanopoulos reported on "Good Morning America" that Clinton also was in the running to be Obama’s secretary of state pick.

Though Clinton and Obama ran a contentious primary campaign for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, Sen. Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, both campaigned for Obama in the general election campaign against the Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Asked if Hillary Clinton would consider the secretary of state job, a former official in President Clinton’s administration said, "I think so. What would you rather do -- be senator or secretary of state?"

I don’t see any of that. Considering the number of posts about Obama’s authoritarian nature, I’d say most FReepers are every bit as worried as you are.

BS. If Republicans didn’t turn out, it was the RINOs, not the hardcore base. Movement conservatives were as energized as ever.

“”I am sure the people who could not stomach voting for Mccain are VERY happy!””

DWD - You’re being facetious, yes? - as I said earlier, I haven’t regained my sense of humor yet. This may very well be the first (and last) time in the history of this great country from which we can’t recover and “bounce back”.

that list should scare anyone who thought obama was going to run his own administration. It is a who’s-who of the democratic party. It seems clear to me this guy is far less in control than he may think. These names are not ‘his’ people, and will not be loyal to him.

The reason I share your fear is because of all his hubris and socialist know-how, I don’t think Obama has a clue as to how he’s going to grapple with the problems he’s going to face. He’s in so far over his head it’s scary.

Then you’d better thank the liberal Republicans and RINOs. Most conservatives sucked it up and voted for McCain. It was the country club bunch that got fooled by Obama’s edumacation.

You're kidding, right? The liberals and RINO's LOVE McCain--the only people posting how they wouldn't vote for him are "real conservatives" who seem to think the rest of us loved the guy, when in reality he was the lesser of two evils.

The ones who stayed home are supposed conservatives. I may admire their principles, but they are as much to blame for our current situation as anyone. Faced with a rotten choice, they did what Obama did--abstain.

The higher the final number of Democrat caucus seats in the next Senate session, the less power HIllary will wield in that Senate.

The most sought after female senator in the next session will by RINOs Snowe and Collins, as they can shutdown any filibuster with their votes.

It will be much easier for the Dem Senate leadership to buy off the two bit whores from Maine than to give up an ounce of power to Hillary.

That leaves Hillary with two, four, six or eight years of backbench drudgery as the Clintonista clique is slowly surplanted by Obama’s sycophants, or the escape clause she pursued today that will bring her closer to the new center of power, the Obama executive level inner circle.

If Clinton runs interference for Obama for 2 years and builds a relationship, she can position herself for ambassadorships or a SCOTUS seat in Obama’s second term. If not she will be in a position to sit on enough corporate boards as to never have to work again, her years of experience on boards during Clinton’s governorship will bring large rewards compounded if Hillary can also ingratiate herself with the Obama circles.

I’m for John Kerry for Secretary of State. We can send over to talk to our enemies, and he can bore them to death. If Obama gives it to Hillary, he will lose all control over foreign policy.

Won’t happen.

Hillary doesn’t want to give up being Senator, and she is not ready to retire yet.

Firstly, it seems despite all the hype of new voters coming out to vote, turnout in 2008 was the same as in 2004, or at best slightly higher:

That doesn't mean there weren't lots of new voters. It means that there were many voters who were sick of the Nanny-State Socialism that has defined the GOP over the past decade and decided to stay home.

Well, there's talk of Schumer being offered a post, too. Wouldn't that be great?

All she would need is some old fashioned Arkancide on Obama, Biden, Pelosi and Byrd and she'd be back living at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Damn, that would be a lot of people to go through. However, I know Hillary and she is VERY ambitious!

You guys shouldn’t put too much stock in this rumor. Remember the rumors of her becoming VP? Michelle Obama would leave Barack if he picked Hilary as SOS. Believe me, NOW that he won the election he does not need her!
