When Paul Theroux met Barack Obama is a Hawaiian hamburger joint

I was asking because I wonder whether you’ve been in the same room as Obama, and how you’d compare them in terms of the impression they make?

I was at Kua ‘Aina in Hale’iwa two years ago–

You met Obama at Kua ‘Aina?

He was squiritng ketchup onto seven hamburgers. There he was with a tray, at the ketchup pump. There were maybe 35 people in Kua ‘Aina, and not a single person recognized him. I was with Pico Iyer. I said I was going over to meet him. Iyer said not to do it, but I said, “I have to.” And he said, “I love your books about Southeast Asia.” Really, he is 10 times more charismatic than Clinton. Then he told Iyer, “I love your book on Cuba.” We had a great talk. He made a tremendous impression. In my lifetime, he’s the most impressive candidate for president that I’ve sene. More than Kennedy. JFK always seemed privileged, entitled.

What did you think of his book?

I thought it was tremendous. First of all, he actually wrote it himself. I’ve read McCain’s books…he tells a great story, but it’s not his prose style. He uses a ghostwriter. Obama can write. And he’s truthful, he talks about his flaws, about the negatives and the difficulties and the struggles. Drugs, race, all of that unpleasant stuff. Anyway, I think Obama will be the end of racial politics.

Seriously?

He could be. Because he’s the bridge. It was B.S. that Clinton was the first black president. But this could be the beginning of the end. In some people’s minds, he’ll never be. But I think he’s a bridge. He’s the most unlikely candidate for president–

Since Lincoln, maybe?

Yeah, he reminds me of Lincoln. The way he looks and talks and all of it, very Lincolnesque. And also, it’s the end of Karl Rove politics. The end of Guantanamo Bay. The end of torture. I believe that in my heart.

Me too.

The 620 000 dead part, I mean.

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

not a fan of theroux’s. i did not enjoy “mosqito coast” at all.
one day, we’ll learn that obama did not write his own books, but
that may be a long time coming. many people still think
jfk wrote “profiles in courage,” and many, who’ve never
looked at the book, assume it is a world class tome. others,
who know better, pretend it is.

He is the way, the truth and the life.

Unless this is satire you needed to put a “mega-barf alert” on it. Thanks, I just lost my bagel...

Barack Obama is a Hawaiian hamburger joint . . . ?

He may be a red doper diaper baby, but I don't think he's a Hawaiian hamburger joint.

Barack Hussein Obama, without ghostwriters and teleprompters, communicates (in writing and orally) at no higher than an average 8th grade level.

This Paul Theroux, whoever he is, is either insane, delusional or stupid; possibly a combination of all three.

"He’s the most unlikely candidate for president–"

Nonsense. He's the perfect media creation- straight out of central casting.

He's the ideal candidate for those who appreciate style over substance because he has no substance.

Comparisons to Lincoln are so over the top this idiot must be a professor some where. Only a phd could so stupid.

one day, we’ll learn that obama did not write his own books, but

My bet is Bill Ayers "helped" write those 0bama books
My bet is that Obama skimmed or had working knowledge of Paul Theroux and Pico Ayer books.
Good enough to fake it at a chance meeting in Hawaii

But he might have read some of those author's books when a student

Paul Edward Theroux (born April 10, 1941) is an American travel writer and novelist, whose best known work is, perhaps, The Great Railway Bazaar (1975), a travelogue about a trip he made by train from Great Britain through Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, through South Asia, then South-East Asia, up through East Asia, as far east as Japan, and then back across Russia to his point of origin. Although perhaps best known as a travel writer, Theroux has also published numerous works of fiction, some of which were made into feature films. He was awarded the 1981 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his novel The Mosquito Coast.

"He's brilliant! I mean, he's read my book! And my friend's book! What a charismatic fellow!"

You mean, that kind of shallow?

LOL ... you sorta nailed it

Paul Theroux wrote very harshly about Africa http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Star-Safari-Overland-Cairo/dp/0618134247 when he revisited after a 40 year absence. So he is relatively neutral and not politically correct

“First of all, he actually wrote it himself”

Uh huh/ Theroux must not be aware (HOW could that
be?) of Jack Cashill’s persuasive research on just this
subject. It makes more sense in light of what we know and
what common sense tells us, that Bill Ayers was at least part of a consortium of helpers that took Obama’s notes and
“embellished” them into the kind of book that would get just this kind of blind attention.
I found this mini-interview pathetic. The truth will eventually come out on Obama.....after he wrecks the USA.
PS-— I tried to read Theroux’s THE FAMILY ARSENAL years ago, even though one its characters “Araba Nightwing” was so obviously an unimaginative stand-in for Vanessa Redgrave/ I stopped reading it when it became clear that the main character, a terrorist/anarchist, after 50 pages or so, was going to remain nothing more than a cipher.
A productive writer, but not a really good one.
