John McCain and Sarah Palin
Townhall.com ^ | November 15, 2008 | Bill O'Reilly

Can someone please explain to me why Sarah Palin is still getting trashed a week after the election? I understand that the left-wing media hammered her during the campaign because they obviously favored Obama, and I also realize that scapegoating has become a national sport. But isn't enough enough with Gov. Palin?

Apparently not.

The fascinating thing about the latest round of Palin bashing is John McCain's reaction. A day after the election, Fox News political correspondent Carl Cameron reported on my TV program that some anonymous McCain staffers were frustrated because Palin didn't know much about the world. The now famous accusation is that the governor did not even know that Africa is a continent.

Palin immediately denied it, and you would think McCain would have stopped that kind of vicious garbage in its tracks. But it took the senator six days before he publicly stuck up for her. So let me ask you something. If a friend of yours was being humiliated, would it take you six days to lend support?

Finally, this week McCain went on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and said he was very "proud" of Palin.

Simultaneously, the liberal media continue to pound the governor as a Marie Antoinette clone, a person who spends lavishly on silk shorts and "spray tanner," as Maureen Dowd wrote in The New York Times.

But even if that's true, WHO CARES? The woman lost and will not be the vice president. Somebody tell The New York Times.

Why is all this happening? Palin is a strong pro-life voice and, as such, has a giant target on her back as far as the left-wing media are concerned. She must be destroyed as an example to other women who may try to promote a pro-life position.

On the right, some Republicans believe that Palin is simply not smart enough to win a national election, and they don't want to have to deal with her again in 2012. If she can be marginalized now, that is a good thing for them.

As for McCain, my colleague Juan Williams believes he just didn't care enough to step up and defend his running mate. He lost, he's resigned, that's that. It's impossible to read anyone's mind, but McCain demonstrated the same lack of urgency in dealing with the Palin-bashers that he did throughout the campaign: There's an economic crisis in this country. Did you get the feeling McCain understood that?

It's impossible to ascertain exactly why Palin continues to get hammered, but fair-minded Americans surely know that it is unnecessary and mean-spirited. This time, enough really is enough.

Probably pre-emptive trashing geared to the 2012 election. The fact is, Sarah Palin represents everything that’s noble, natural, and good in the American character; thus, not surprisingly, the America-bashing Left despises her and fears any prospective Palin candidacy.

I heard parts of Riley's radio show when he asked Juan about why McCain stayed silent. Rather curious that Riley appears to want to redistribute the blame upon McCain when it was Riley alll by himself gave the venue for the lies about Sarah to be heard around the world.

Sure, O'reilly isn't that obtuse.

The opposition -- both on the other side of the political spectrum and within the GOP itself -- would not be attacking Gov. Palin if they did not fear her becoming a force in the next few years.

If they don't "take her down now", they may not be able to later. They see what she could become, and it doesn't include them.

She is charismatic. She is appealing. She is personable. She is smart. And that does make her the most dangerous politician in America at the present time -- dangerous to others' political careers and aspirations.

Not to mention false. How many media outlets covered Palin being cleared of charges relating to the trooper firing "scandal," after the blitz of stories trying to indict her? Reminds me of the 230+ stories that came out accusing Newt Gingrich of tax evasion, and not one of those same authors published the not guilty verdict.

Remember the hyperventillating about the "missing munitions" or whatver the heck it was in Iraq during the 2004 election? I still have no idea what happened with that, since that story just fell off the face of the earth when it didn't undermine Bush the way it was intended.

BOR is still a little out of sorts because Governor Palin did not appear on his show. It will probably affect his coverage unless and until she does.

There is just something about O’Reilly that I just don't get the right vibes for. I think that he is a moderate and sits on the fence. I just don't trust people that can't make up their minds. Anyway, I didn't like how he ogled over Obama Hussein in the interview with him.

Atleast we haven’t had to see and hear Major Garrett crowing on and on about Obama.... I was getting disgusted with him, too.

As for Cameron, maybe in some weird way, he thinks he has ‘winning’ news to report now.

This selection was historic in one way - never has a candidate NOT want to be elected, John McCain was. His candidacy was the ultimate payback to President Bush for the 2000 primaries. And the Libs were all so compliant in sticking it one more time, by giving Conservatives the ONE candidate they did not want.

Somehow (God truly works in mysterious ways), McCain did the one thing that, possibly, win the Presidency, picking Governor Palin. Then he did ABSOLUTELY nothing to help her.

So, go ahead, trash her all you want. In the end, it will be Conservatives - not RINOs - who get revenge.

They are trashing Rush and Palin because they are a threat to their agenda; therefore, they must be destroyed. I think there is quite a divide in the Gop between the Palin-types (us) and the more progressive side (RINOS).

Palin hit a raw nerve. When she spoke truth and promised to clean up corruption, Washington, the Newsmedia, and academia went into a meltdown. They’re still in panic mode.

O’Reilly did what all media members did. He went soft on Obama so that Obama would still talk to him. After Obama finally sat down with O’Reilly for an interview, then O’Reilly started to be a little more critical of Obama. It’s Obama’s playbook. Don’t cross Obama or he’ll throw your reporters off the plane.

For someone who’s “looking out for us”, O’Reilly isn’t seeing very clearly. If he doesn’t recognize that Palin is a target because she is a REAL conservative, and is very popular, what good is he as a watchdog for the “little guy”?
