Another list of tips. There are a few that I disagree with such as the tips for dealing with credit cards ( I suggest using a pair of scissors). And a $4 latte is not a "must have" when you can make your own faster and cheaper than at Starbucks.

Anything to add to the list?

Some more:
1) Use bath/shower water to water the garden or flush the toilet.

2) I’m ok with the credit cards and put everything on and pay at the end of the month to get a free month of interest

3) If your feet are cold, put on a hat. Your head is the #1 heat loss area of the body.

4) We’ve keep the thermostat around 60 in northern ohio and wisconsin in winter and never use the AC. Wear a sweater and thermals if your cold. You get used to it.

5) Garden - garden - garden. For green onions just cut the tops and they will grow back 3 or 4 times over the summer. Chop up the tops and freeze them for up to a year to use in soups/seasoning.

6) Make your own bread - taste better too.

7) Hunt to stock the freezer

8) Hang plastic in front of the fridge shelves to limit heat entry. Keep track of where things are on a chart on the front of the door to keep the door open less.

9) If you only need to heat something up - ie boil a cup of water... it’s cheaper to use the microwave for two minutes than the range top. which leads to....

10) Know your wattages for all your appliances and use accordingly.

11) Get one of the plastic storage containers - about 10 gallons - and put in your tub with a small step stool to sit on. Fill it up with appropriate temp water. Take a small bucket to wet yourself down. Then soap up. Then use the remaining water to rinse. Capture rinse water to use in #1.

12) Load your own ammo

13) Use voice-over-IP phone rather than land line or cell. I pay less than $40/month and my wife gets unlimited to Japan. I clocked her once with her sister at 5 hours and going when I finally turned in for the night. She’s happy - then I’m happy.

14) Roll newspapers for logs

15) Reuse the back of mail flyers for scratch paper. I get so much of that junk I can’t keep it all - mulch the rest.

....enough for now ;)

Food is expensive, gas remains stubbornly high and winter's big heating bills are coming.

Gas remains stubbornly high where?

I just saw it for $2.25 here in NY, the Vampire State.

Wegmans just dropped the prices on a number of items.

Not that the ideas about saving money aren't good, but this guy is being a bit disingenuous.

I do almost all my own baking. When I make a batch of cookies, I make a big batch and freeze about half of it. That way, when I don’t have time to make it, I can pull the frozen cookie dough out and bake them up. Way cheaper than buying the refrigerated stuff. Plus you make the mess only once. It is more of a time saver than anything, but it sure helps.

Years ago my old pastor was preaching a sermon on being good stewards of our money, and he shared a saying he had learned from his parents, who lived through the Great Depression. It was 4 or 5 lines long and a couple of them were, “Wear it out. Use it up.” Does anyone know the entire saying? I’ve been trying to keep it in mind as we look for ways to save money.

Try buying a catalytic wood burning stove, also they make retrofit catalysts for older stoves. The the eco-rats have already placed restrictions on wood burning in some areas, but a catalyst equipped stove emits little to no smoke or smell and is difficult to discover. In addition the catalyst will actually ignite the gasses before they enter the flue generating up to 30% more heat from the same amount of wood as compared to a non-catalyst equipped stove.Just remember that if you scrounge for wood don`t burn anything thats pressure treated and while some say you can burn coal or cheaper fuels such as peat this is not recommended by the manufacturers who say it may result in a flue fire and will put serious wear on the catalyst resulting in its premature failure.

I don’t agree with automating all your bills, unless you also read them very closely. You could be taken for a lot if you aren’t on the lookout. Mistakes can and will be made.

Wonderful post, RKBA.

I’ve not finished reading all of the responses yet, but do expect to learn from the good folks here.

One I’ve not come across yet: Always check the Clearance Section of any store. I’ve bought anything from expensive shampoos to vitamins to toilet paper at a mere fraction of the original cost, and almost always can find a gift on the aisle for any occasion.

Too, I’m one who loves to clean. While vinegar and baking soda do one heck of a job on certain things, the cheapest of washing powder works wonders on such things as cleaning the bath tub, kitchen sink, etc., as it softens “soap scum” better and it’s far easier than “elbow grease”!

I did notice one post regarding the cutting back of meat at every meal. Growing up, we had what we called “vegetable plates” too many times to count and do more so today. Great on the budget and the system.

Thanks again,

BR

I’d bet that you got pinged to this, but don’t have the time to go through the whole thread to find out and don’t want to assume anything.

I'm all for saving money, but its a losing proposition.

Creating wealth is embedded in the US Constitution. (Its one reason why communists wish to destroy it.) Wealth is created by using the creativity of mankind to selectively exploit (improve) property. Wealth is protected by sound real and intellectual property rights. If in doubt, refer to the US Constitution. Philosophical questions may be answered by referring to Benjamin Franklin ....
