Obama's children: Off to private school at a cost of $29,000 each

By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

Barack and Michelle Obama's children will attend Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., it was confirmed Saturday. It's a private school that charges (gulp) $29,000 a year in tuition.

And that doesn't cover the cost of textbooks or other services from the school. You can see the eye-popping numbers at the school's Web site.

In KC, that's double what the most expensive private schools -- Rockhurst, St. Theresa's, Barstow, Pembroke Day -- charge.

Which category of campaign expenses will this be listed under?

Or does this money come from the foreign donors, especially those in Gaza Strip??

Families OFF LIMITS ???....

Give me a break...the Press was always “hounding” the Bush twins.
Also Mrs. Welch did not live with the Bushes, she may have spent vacations and time with them but she had her own home in Texas, and she has been in a Retirement Village setting for the past 4 years...by the way do you recall where Hillary's mother lived?? yep in the White House

It was OK with you to bash the Bushes for the past 8 years but with Hussein Obama we can only disagree on “policy and politics” is that RIGHT???

I fully intend to treat BHO just as nice as the Democrats and Press treated President Bush... UNDERSTAND ????

I went to a well-known private high school. This was a long time ago. I remember the approximate tuition which was a small fraction of $29,000, as well as the fact that my parents were still concerned about the cost. I just looked up some numbers and I see that the cost of education over this long period has been growing at about twice the overall inflation rate.

I know that if my tuition back then had been double what it was, I probably would not have been able to go. How many middle-class parents can afford to spend $58000 a year on pre-college education? I think the answer must be close to zero. In other words, these fine private schools, which were once a stretch for the middle class, are now only for the children the very wealthy and and those who may be able to get scholarships.

Unfortunately, where he sends his kids to school is our business. You see Barack Obama is a big supporter of the teachers unions, the kind they don’t have at Sidwell Friends, but the kind that every public school must have as demanded by his politburo. He has rejected vouchers because it is a threat to the monopoly that the NEA has bought and paid for with teachers’ dues money given to the Democratic Party. In Newark NJ, African-American Mayor Cory Booker is for vouchers, and anything else that will get his kids out of the permanent - Democratic created underclass in that Gulag of Education known as the public school system.

Do I blame Obama for sending his kids to private school - the answer is no because he wants the best education for them. But I do blame the hypocrisy of his party and I cast some doubt on this bogus security claim - a public school should be made safe if it isn’t, dammit, and let’s stop this blatant lying!

Jersey City, Trenton, New Brunswick, Patterson, Passaic, Camden, Philly, Wilmington, Baltimore, Washington DC, Chicago - the school children in these Democratically controlled public schools have learned nothing but how to walk through a metal detector. And for years the teachers union, which funds the Democratic party, has demanded more money and more resources to solve a problem that their own existence causes. The NEA is the UAW of education and like the UAW, it should be ended as soon as possible because labor unions are past their prime and little more than extortive devices that bring down production and bleed industries dry. Labor unions have absolutely nothing to do with the intellectual development of a human mind - so why are they forced down kids throats.

Why is Michigan a disabled economy and Alabama makes millions of cars profitably - because Alabama has no unions.

The Democrats have lectured the rest of the country on racism for decades and frankly the hypocrisy is sickening when it comes to their own doings about urban education. Obama should be forced to send his kids to public schools because he forces every else’s to do so. I am sick of the economic apartheid where rich Democratic folks can avoid the public schools because they are terrible places, but let the poor, which they claim to advocate, suffer as their children are forced to go to failing schools. Which means they grow up dependent on the government, which means they will turn to the Democratic party to dispense life support in exchange for mindless votes - the political benefits of creating a permanent underclass. Have we seen a change in these schools in 50 years - I think not. Time to flush the unions, the monopoly, the whole thing, and in the cities finally offer these families some real choice about educating their children.

The Nixon girls went there as well and, way back, Teddy Roosevelt’s children. I think I heard that the Biden’s grandchildren also go there.

"Of course, grandma will be provided with FREE HEALTH CARE, FREE MEALS, limo rides, party dresses."

Well, I can't say for sure about who pays for what, but at least there is a precedent for the first lady's mom being in residence. Both Truman and Eisenhower's mothers-in-law lived in the White House and Mrs. Truman's mother even died there.

I’m a grandmother....From that viewpoint, I would want to share the years with them but keeping a very low profile. We don’t live forever and the grandkids are certainly one of my greatest joys.

Very well spoken, Mr. Titus-Maximus. Between some other freepers comments and your essay here, y’all have changed my mind. I have always been anti-union and thought the NEA was a total horror—but I wasn’t thinking along those lines when I started out posting to this thread.

Your post is the best I've read on here in quite sometime. There are so many bits and pieces clouding these issues that it is sometimes difficult to get to the meat and focus on the real concern.

Oh and I will forever refer to the Public school system as the gulag. Classic.

Are they ? Really ?

So, on one hand, you have the complete and utter disaster of ‘public shools’ in DC where they can learn how to smoke crack, OR, you can send them to an elite private school where they’ll learn how the unwashed masses are ruled.

If you *had* the money, where would you send yours, if that was the choice ?

Pardon me, but when did I EVER say that it was okay to bash the Bushes?!? And it’s posts like yours that give credence to the false analogy that the loony left and loony right are in the same boat. Just because the opposition is immature and reprehensible does not mean that it is okay or worthwhile to emulate their actions.

As for families being off limits...YES. Mrs. Robinson, Michelle Obama, and the Obama children have done nothing to warrant some of the attacks on them at this site. It is as wrong to attack them as it was and still is wrong for the press to attack Sarah Palin’s family, or any other family of any public figure. Go after the press if you really really want to attack the responsible parties.

The politics of personal destruction that started in the late 1980s must stop if this country is going to move forward again. The Clintons, Newt, Al Sharpton, Rudy, etc., all need to be buried in the dustbin of history because it is way past time for them to get off the stage.

Basil,
This IS an important issue, and his decision about private schools SHOULD be exploited, to the maximum extent possible. He has choice, we (with less means) do NOT have choice.

In a few months, BO will be telling the rest of us to “shut up” about the sh&tty public schools, and use them.

Not his kids, though.

I think you stepped in it, here. This is a critical issue, and BamBam is voting “present” on this one, by taking one side (’Keep (read: forced subsidize) Govt. schools, they’re great!’) but deciding with the other side with his & Michelle’s actions - failing to use these “public goods.”

Half of California’s budget GOES to public schools. This is a HUGE issue, out here. His actions — to avoid public education - speak volumes. They aren’t schools, they’re toxic waste dumps
