Policeman slays aggressive dog

A police officer shot and killed a pit bull shortly after the animal killed a cat and another dog in a West Side neighborhood Saturday morning, police said.

The incident started about 10:40 a.m. in the 5200 block of Bakersfield Street.

Resident David Avila said he witnessed the white pit bull attack the dog and cat a few houses down from his home.

“We have reported that dog to authorities two or three times over the past month,” he said. “I’m glad the police officer did what he did. What if it wasn’t a cat or dog that pit bull killed? It could have been one of my granddaughters.”

After a neighbor reported the attack to 911, a police officer driving through the neighborhood found the dog a block away on Greyrock Drive.

“The dog was walking toward him, so he didn’t have a choice,” Avila said. “He had to shoot the dog.”

ANY large dog, if not properly trained and kept in their own yard, can constitute a danger to people and other dogs. I've owned Great Danes, English Sheepdogs, and German Shepherds all my life and any one of them could have done tons of damage if left to their own devices.

Now I have three tiny dogs that travel with us all the time. They have to be properly trained, too, otherwise they can be just awful nuisances—and maybe even take someones foot right off at the ankle!

> Pit Bull is not a real breed name - but Staffordshirte Terrier, etc, whi have found them faithful, loyal, protective and reliable companions.

I don’t really have a beef with Staffys — they aren’t what we would consider to be “Pit Bulls” in New Zealand. They often come into the “breeding mix” of a Pit Bull, but they aren’t “Pit Bulls” in their own right.

Pit Bulls are dangerous mungrel mutts. “Dangerous” because they are bred to emphasize aggression: a breed flaw for nearly every dog. “Mungrel” because nobody really knows what has gone into the dog husbandry-wise: it could be some Staffy, it could be some Rotty, it could be some Ridgeback, it could be some mastiff, it could be some Dogo or any other variety of dog. And “Mutts” because they are not and never will be an identifiable breed.

Nobody in their right mind would want to own a Pit Bull. They are good for dog fighting and criminal acts, and that’s about it.

Unlike Staffys, which usually have the positive attributes that you mention.

I have no beef with Staffys. Or Boston Terriers. Or American Bull Terriers.

Gave a coworker some onions and japs last spring: They complimented, “ Man, those were good and strong! “

” Its all in the fertilizer. “ I replied.

“The dog was walking toward him, so he didn’t have a choice”

What, just walking, not running or lunging? Didn’t the article say the officer was driving? Couldn’t he get back in his car and call animal control? It doesn’t at all sound to me like he had no choice. Then again, I’m not as prone to violence as cops.

Good shooting but he should have got him the first time.

Show me the genetic difference between a Pit and a Staff.

> Show me the genetic difference between a Pit and a Staff.

That would be relatively easy. A Staff would have genetics that are fairly similar to all other Staffs.

A Pit Bull would have genetics that are all over the show, because nobody knows what went into it.

That is why they are useless, dangerous MUNGREL MUTTS. The “Mungrel Mutt” part acknowledges that its genetic makeup is largely unknown and unknowable.

I've shot 2 in the last 3 months. One was on the ranch, about 2 miles from the nearest neighbor and the other was in the alley behind my house. He had my neighbors cat dangling from his mouth. The police were called immediately.

I agree, and somebody needs to do that.

If the dog posed an imminent threat to the cop or someone else it should have been shot. Pity cops don’t act similarly when it comes to gang bangers.

I’m a cop. I got attacked by a dog (an Akita) while arresting its owner, a violent stalker, last week. The good news was that the stalker helped me forget the pain of the dog attack by punching me a couple of times. I finally kicked the dog off of me and returned the favor to the stalker.

Guess that makes me prone to violence, right? Send me your address and I’ll give it to the stalker. Maybe your daughter and he can spark up a relationship...

He’s a snob...He thinks a pedigree magically confers superior status on a dog.

"What, just walking, not running or lunging? Didn’t the article say the officer was driving?"

Those were probably incomplete comments from bystanders. It was a pit bull, and it had killed another dog.

"Couldn’t he get back in his car and call animal control? It doesn’t at all sound to me like he had no choice. Then again, I’m not as prone to violence as cops."

Animal control often cannot catch a live pit bull (too wary or aggressive). Darts don't work, as the larger animals most often run too far away and hide after being darted. The problems for other residents from problem animals subsequently go on and on.

Very few police are self-compelled to cause violence, although one or a few are rather "political" in each of most jurisdictions. Too many pit bulls initiate violence, and they're only animals. Animal safety comes after that of people.

Pit Bulls in my neighborhood all have had very short lifespans. Rottweillers too, just haven’t been as many of those as we’d like to see. Under the cover of night, a silent weapon, swift and deadly. Whack!
