The culture that produces the names and the maladjustment is the cause of both.

I think that was the conclusion in Freakanomics. Kids from such backgrounds are pretty much screwed, even if their parents name them "John" or "Lisa." The ridiculous names are a symptom of a much worse pathology.

The ridiculous names I think are a lame attempt to give these kids something. They aren’t teaching them, or providing for them, no mentoring, no leading by example, no discipline, no hope, no change. Like my former neighbor, a white redneck girl with assorted boyfriends from the ‘hood, who named her boy “Unique” (I have no clue how she actually spelled it). Silly made up non-names in an attempt to be “unique”. The other factor is that they can’t spell. The names are often lousy phonetic spellings.
