An Ugly Attack on Mormons

The easiest targets for an organized campaign against religious freedom of conscience.

By Jonah Goldberg

Did you catch the political ad in which two Jews ring the doorbell of a nice working-class family? They barge in and rifle through the wife’s purse and then the man’s wallet for any cash. Cackling, they smash the daughter’s piggy bank and pinch every penny. “We need it for the Wall Street bailout!” they exclaim.

No? Maybe you saw the one with the two swarthy Muslims who knock on the door of a nice Jewish family and then blow themselves up?

No? Well, then surely you saw the TV ad in which two smarmy Mormon missionaries knock on the door of an attractive lesbian couple. “Hi, we’re from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints!” says the blond one with a toothy smile. “We’re here to take away your rights.” The Mormon zealots yank the couple’s wedding rings from their fingers and then tear up their marriage license.

As the thugs leave, one says to the other, “That was too easy.” His smirking comrade replies, “Yeah, what should we ban next?” The voice-over implores viewers: “Say no to a church taking over your government.”

Obviously, the first two ads are fictional because no one would dare run such anti-Semitic or anti-Muslim attacks.

The third ad, however, was real. It was broadcast throughout California on Election Day as part of the effort to rally opposition to Proposition 8, the initiative that successfully repealed the right to same-sex marriage in the state.

What was the reaction to the ad? Widespread condemnation? Scorn? Rebuke? Tepid criticism?

Nope.

The Los Angeles Times, a principled opponent of Proposition 8, ran an editorial lamenting that the “hard-hitting commercial” was too little, too late.

But I do have God living within me, the Holy Spirit, and He convicts me of what is truth and what is not.

You have a shining soul, dear FRiend.

Other sheep could have meant the gentiles, it also could have meant those on this continent. Perhaps I’ll share a good argument for the latter some day.

The Bible has existed for centuries, but you are aware there isn’t a known original in existence right? Same w/ the “sticks” I suppose. Although the sticks have been preserved in the form of the Bible & BOM

Actually, as he stated in this thread, Colo just comes from a jack Mormon family. I can tell you as a Mormon, he really doesn’t know as much as you think.

Ultimately, all will have the occasion to hear the truth & to accept it of reject it. Those that accept & live it whether here of afterward will receive Celestial glory.

Why is it so difficult for you to just say that you believe the only "truth" is YOUR truth?

Why all the dodging around...the "We believe that ALL Christians will have the opportunity for Celestial glory. In fact we believe all mankind will. You should know that. That includes folks in China that have never even heard of Jesus Christ, let alone had the opportunity to accept him as their Savior. That's the mercy of the Lord."

as if you are saying that there is no "catch" to your statement? The "catch" being mandatory obedience to the mormon dictates. That's a whole different ball game from Christian belief.

Well, you know what I think of the BOM so no use in hoeing that row again. For the Christian, the Bible is the source we use because it was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, as 2nd Timothy writes it, and it has survived all these years because God took care of it. I won’t convince you and you won’t convince me, Reno. Let’s just stay friendly...

I voted for Romney in the primaries. I liked him better than I did McCain. And it didn’t bother me that he was Mormon, just like I voted for Kennedy and it didn’t bother me he was Catholic.

You’re so wrong. The hate that comes from those who were angry with you because of Prop. 8 is true hate. There aren’t any of us that I know of who hate Mormons. We disagree with your religion for sure, but that’s far from hate. You need to learn to tell the difference, FRiend.

I don’t think we’re saying that any poster or person is a heretic, but the teachings of their churches are. That IS a difference.

Being a Christian first is what we’re supposed to be. Doesn’t mean you have to vote only for a Christian, Edit. A christian is to put God first and everything else behind that, including politics, gay marriage and all of our other pet peeves.

WHAT definition of "celestial glory" are you using here? THIS one? "This should be your goal: to inherit celestial glory and to help others receive that great blessing as well. In other words, temple marriage is a requirement for obtaining the highest degree of celestial glory."

Exactly, GF. You almost have to be a lawyer to see how a word with a specific definition behind it is used in one context, and then see how they'll use the same exact word with other loaded meanings tacked on within their own circles.

Repentance literally is doing a u-turn. But Mormon repentance means never committing the same sin again for what you repented. (Latter definition courtesy of Spencer Kimball)

Grace literally means a gift, as in a free gift from God. Mormon grace is what kicks in from God eventually...but only after men have done everything they could do.

Priesthood Biblically is man's representative before God. Mormons turn that around and define it as God's representative to man.

True spiritual authority is what originates from the ultimate true God of the universe. LDS authority is what Joe Smith had. When you ask LDS where he got his authority from, they say Elohim & Jesus Christ. When you ask them where Elohim got his authority from, the honest Mormon will tell you Elohim's god (boy what a strange phrase to even utter).

When you ask them where that god got his authority from, they won't answer you -- if you've even gotten this far in the discussion. The reason they won't answer you, is 'cause they know where you're going with it. There is no ultimate authority in the Mormon church, because there's no original ultimate god. (They don't the god who passed the buck to begin with).

I think Elsie's best post on this thread is #738 where he compares historic Christianity's definition of common terms and joey-come-lately Mormon redefinitions...see particularly sin, repentance, grace, gospel, and hell.

There are no Mormon bashers here, only those who disagree with the Mormon teachings. THAT, my friend, is not bashing. That’s speaking the truth as Christ commanded us to do.
