The Cars That Leftists Drive
Pajamas Media ^ | December 4 | Ron Radosh

Everyone knows the stereotype of the left-wing academic liberal, who drinks a daily latte at Starbucks and drives a Volvo wagon. Since that first appeared, the car is no longer a Volvo, but more than likely a Toyota, a Hyundai, a Nissan or even a BMW, a Mercedes or a Volkswagon—anything but an American car.

In fact, I can’t name anyone I know who drives an American car except me. The argument is simple: if you want a good car, buy Japanese.

The Japanese automakers, to put it simply, don’t have to deal with the unions. And here is where I get to the blatant hypocrisy....

2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 LXT ...kid across the street wrecked it(i’m sure alcohol had NOTHING to do with that), all his friends told him it couldn’t be fixed. I gave him $500 for it and got a lower control arm from the junk yard for $50..driving it everywhere...great truck...kid needs friends who are better mechanics.

my wife’s ‘97 Escort has 225,000 mi. on it and you still can’t hear it when it’s running...great car for a cheapie.

1991 Mazda Miata, purchased third-hand with 95.5K on the odometer. Now at 236K and still on its original engine.

But don’t ask me about how many sets of shocks it’s had since I bought it. :) Or about how much the last set cost (custom-valved stuff ain’t cheap, folks).

Actually, Scion is a Toyota product. I only know one Scion owner, but he’s probably one of the least self-righteous people I know (dunno his political leanings; the topic has never really come up).

1993 Dodge Dakota, 4WD, though I’m sure most of the parts were made in some other country.

This guy is on to something. I know lots of liberals (mostly colleagues and family members) who will fiercely defend unions. Yet almost to a person they drive foreign cars (mostly Honda and Toyota).

When I've pointed out the same argument this author uses to them, they either change the subject or more likely blame the "overpaid", "incompetent" and selfish management. You really can't convince these folks that the UAW and the legacy costs are what is killing the US Auto Industry. These people really don't like facts that contradict their preconceived opinions.

At our ed of the block, the only household that’s conservative is the one in which I live - and the only house that has any domestic cars. Well, somebody across the street has a business car that’s a Caddy, but we’re the only ones with a complete compliment of Fords.

I was behind a Lincoln Towncar last week with an “obama” bumper sticker.

I’m not sure how valid the generalizations are.

I drive a 95 Buick Roadmaster, and don’t have any problems with it. Best car I’ve ever had.

I drive a Canadian car, a Honda Pilot (my second one), and a better car in the world does not exist.

I won't by an American car for a simple reason, and it has nothing to do with politics or ideology. The reason is that I had a terrible ownership experience with each of the three American cars (two Chevrolets and one Jeep) that I've owned. Poor quality and poor service. In what way do they deserve my hard-earned green?

My Pilot has quality, value and performance, not to mention bulletproof reliability. Honda has earned my business. Simple.
