Yeah, Kailua is a nice little town (I lived there once) but the area that's described sounds like neighboring Lani Kai. When I lived in Kailua, I could walk to the beach access lanes in about 10 minutes. I could also walk to Lani Kai in about 15 minutes and then walk back to the Kailua beach access lanes to get to the beach.
Kailua was middle class and Lani Kai was upscale with a common supermarket in between.
