Thrill Killing
American Spectator ^ | 11 dec 08 | Bill Croke

I saw a short item recently in the Idaho Falls Post-Register. Forty-six dead Canada geese were found stuffed into a dumpster in Soda Springs, Idaho. A state wildlife official speculated that the geese were shot "over decoys" placed in nearby farm fields or from a boat on Blackfoot Reservoir.

It's a sickeningly familiar story. Two moose shot and left to rot near Dubois, Wyoming this fall. Two yearling grizzly bears killed near Union Pass in roughly the same area as the moose. An increasing wasted antelope body count littering the gas fields near Rock Springs and Pinedale, Wyoming. Senselessly murdered mule deer left on the ground in Nevada. All this has nothing to do with the legal autumn hunting seasons, an annual "rite" properly observed by thousands in the West.

Someone was probably tired of the geese crapping on everything. They are pigs with wings. I don’t really care what happens to them.

I’m opposed to indescriminate shooting of animals.

Could it be that the dead Canada Geese were culled as some sort of legal pest control? I know that in large numbers (say 200+) they can get very territorial and quite dangerous to small children. I have seen them take over an entire playground and chase off anybody who comes near: even dogs.

Short of some sort of legal cull, tho’: those dead geese are an inexcusable waste.

To sum it up: Bad things are happening out in the fields, where some hunters are irresponsible. And in conclusion, we need to clean up the video game industry.

I'd phrase it differently: We live in a culture of death. Over 50 million aborted babies, active euthaniasia movements, etc. But some folks think the big issue is centered around geese. Clueless do-gooders.

Thrill killing — you have it in the city, you have it in the country. Fairly rare, but disgusting in all forms.

Someone was probably tired of the geese crapping on everything.

Every year here (during goose seasons) our hunting family gets calls from private landowners begging us to get rid of their goose nuisance. The geese love small ponds and create an astounding amount of scat and loose feathers, which poses serious health hazards to any farm animals (and probably wildlife too) which depend on the watering holes.

A human can be murdered, not so an animal. It seems the writer may be one of those people moving into the west who abhor hunting or objective reporting.

It’s a big tent, _guy.....it’s possible to object to and be sad about a lot of senseless and unnecessary killing including that of babies, adults, geese, moose, bears, compassion and reason.

An increasing wasted antelope body count littering the gas fields near Rock Springs and Pinedale, Wyoming.

With the huge influx of out-of-staters due to the energy boom, I'm going to hazard a guess that it's not Wyoming folks doing this.

That said, a guy could shoot a lot of antelope in Wyoming and probably die of old age before doing any significant harm to the population. Not that it's right...

“Someone was probably tired of the geese crapping on everything. They are pigs with wings. I don’t really care what happens to them.”

Is this the natural migratory pattern the geese have been following forever? If so, any complaints make about as much sense as those waterheads who move close to an airport or shooting range and bitch about the noise.

I hate to see the needless killing and waste of the rest of the animals, but Canada Poopers have become such a nuisance that instead of a gun season we need to have a proximity fused antiaircraft artillery season so that whole flocks can be taken out in short order.

Strange how the good people who are raging about this demand that the law-abiding be disarmed in our Deep Blue Cesspool Cities, ravaged daily by gangbangers and career criminals (who vote "D"). Liberalism IS a mental desease.

A lot of Canada Poopers are non-migratory. The flock stays around for years, have no natural predators and are generally off limits for hunting.

I am a hunter. I do not see the thrill in killing. Not to be cliche, but the thrill is in the hunt. The kill is the culmination of a lot of work and effort. The prize is the food you harvest in nature for yourself and the family, along with an occasional mount to show.

It is an ever shrinking group of hunters that can brag about the skills they have learned and gained through experience through hunting. Tracking different animals, their sizes and speed is a talent that is being lost by generation. Sneaking quietly into the woods and disguising yourself to ambush prey takes patience, calm and cunning. Hunting should be a measure of self discipline and ambition.

I understand that. I don't support the senseless killings of animals.

However, there seems to be a lot of issues (like this one) where any sensible Conservative would be willing to make common cause with enviro-wackos, the Gaia-worshippers, and the left-wing do-gooders. It's a big tent, as you say. We should all work together on such a wonderful issue.

Meanwhile, how often is the shoe on the other foot? The Left won't compromise at all on abortion. Partial Birth Abortion? That's sacred. Infants Born Alive Act? That's an abomination.

Folks on the right are willing to work with the Left some of the time.
Folks on the Left are never willing to work with the folks on the right.

You know what the outcome of that is? The Left wins.

I agree with the geese, I would like to see someone take action and get rid of a good number of those pests.

Thanks for the title, now I’ll have Ministry’s “So What” in my head all day. At least it’s a good song.

A couple hooved animals and a flock of birds killed in our nation of millions of hunters? That is a miracle, not a tragedy.
