And Bush can just call an independent prosecuter and tell him to hold off?

No, I agree that Fitzgerald probably is a partisan Dem. But it is obvious that Bush in particular and the GOP in general felt it would violate their “gentleman’s agreement” if they revealed anything about Obambi - such as his corruption, his associates, doubts about his citizenship, and even his middle name - and they conducted a campaign that shied away from all the unsavory things about the annointed Great Leader.

The details in this case must have been known earlier, but I would suspect that Fitzgerald - who is partisan but also wants to get his man - was told to wait until “the people had decided.” And now it’s almost too late.
