My hubby has been out of work for 6 weeks now. Employer lied on him and he did not get his unemployment. We live in st lucie county florida officially highest unemployment in the state of FL at 10.3%. Less than 1000 in the bank, cant pay mortgage this month, no benefits. 2 teenage boys.

This hurts, but not the end of the world. One boy gonna be a priest, attacks are a normal part of our life. Great family support system who will help us through, though we will have to give up our home unless a miracle happens to relocate to Delaware where the family is. Hubby is a HVAC mechanic w/26 years experience. No need for him here now, its freezing by Fl terms.

While we were unable to save for that rainy day (I stayed home to raise my kids on one mechanics salary so I could be with my boys) I don’t regret it for a second :). God is in control and who knows why we have to leave. Only God knows what is coming, and I believe because He knows my needs, but I don’t know the future, I will yield to His plan. Be not afraid all, its only stuff...And good luck to you, sir, with your company!

About 6 months ago, we were turning over rocks looking for
a cobal programmer. Old instruments needed to be updated.
Or something like that, I just buy stuff.

I may be gone in a couple of months. Budget cuts and office politics may be the end of me. I got another very low evaluation today with a list of molehills being turned into mountains. I was also told that some whole departments don't want me around although no names were mentioned.

In my adult working life, I have always gotten good and very good evaluations in different types of jobs. I guess someone higher in the food chain just doesn't like me a whole lot and is having a paper trail generated. Why bother, there are budget cuts, just tell me to leave? I guess someone wants to play a game.

Being one of those lowly paid state employees working any side stuff I can, it still isn't easy to clear much but I try.

I always keep a current resume on the home PC and in a yahoo account in case I see something away from home.

I am ready to say adios to Columbia if it comes down to it. Sad really, Columbia has been very good to me.

Nowadays I appreciate the summer job working on pipelines for my dated heavy equipment experience, 3 years of HS auto mechanics, my military time, and some other secondary skills I have picked up. Supporting PCs has turned into a choice I regret. At least I can do more than just let a PC run my life.

I’ve been canned. One of the better things that ever happened to me. I can’t imagine how cranky I’d be if I were still working in that hell hole.

Good luck! Lost my job on Nov. 20 - I don't have 3 years socked away, and I have a mortgage, but I have some savings and a loving family and can survive for a few months. Only problem is that I enjoy my work and am going quietly nuts at home every day. Hoping to re-deploy after Christmas.

Am currently exploring options for medical insurance for me and my family - any recommendations out there? COBRA is too expensive ($1500 / month) am looking into other options.

LOL! I guess I will spend the weekend reviewing my old COBOL manuals and do a job search.

Just joking …

As I remember, COBOL was an extremely hard language to work with and very difficult to do anything but “loop” on itself.

Dang this is nice. I may decide to only work four days a week next year!

Damn good plan. Keep some of your life for YOUR life!

The ancient Essenes believed one should only have to work 4 hours a day to provide for ones necessities. Then 4 hours for study and 4 hours for personal pursuits...

sounds right to me. But we are a nation of slaves. We just don't know it. (But slaves that also have to provide for our own shelter/food, etc.)

The hours of our days are spent working for someone else - who also controls our income.

Young folk should be trained in entrepreneurship and all the ways one can make a living self-employed.

AND how to do what you've done - put money aside...stick with your first house and get mortgage paid off early, etc etc.

And go hunting and fishing. ;o)

I still have my dishwashing skills, although the equipment is probably computerized now, and you need a two year community college degree to operate it, but if I am laid off now, and the company is really nasty about it, no announcements, layoffs, willy nilly, every two weeks, while the Chinaman CEO announces a record quarter and optimistic forecasts (!), if that happens to yours truly, there’ll be no jobs for the cat of my age and skills, other than a greeter at Wal-Mart. Scary shiite!

Make sure you sign up for educational retraining during the first few weeks of your unemployment. Should you decide later on that this is the route you want to take (even at your own expense), you will not be penalized on unemployment benefits. One of those rules to be aware of in my state.

check into megalife and health. Also look into the site americans for financial security. They have some links to healthmarkets insurance that works with mega. I got quoted for 477 amonth with them for me hubby and 2 boys, and hubby and i smoked. Still could not afford the coverage but was reasonable and good coverage. ppo, big network 90% participation nationwide, copay for most things, you choose deductibles. good luck

Well, you sound like you’ll make a fine businessman-hope for the best and plan for the worst.

I remember as a young boy my dad would get laid off most every winter. He knew it was coming and made his plans, never wanted for anything.

Some of my best memories are the family sitting around the kitchen table playing board games and watching it snow. Your time is still very valuable and not just to you.

What sort of work were you doing?

HVAC/R....People will pay to be comfortable before eating.

Actually, I'm looking to help and have contacted a person with the church to offer 50% off to over 65/disabled. I really want to help those being screwed by local contractors. I won't go into detail, but I hope to lower local contractor costs even at my expense.
