Gray Lady—Gone By May?
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 01/08/2009 8:26:10 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

Virtually all the predictions about the death of old media have assumed a comfortingly long time frame for the end of print . . . But what if the old media dies much more quickly? What if a hurricane comes along and obliterates the dunes entirely? Specifically, what if The New York Times goes out of business—like, this May? It’s certainly plausible. -- End Times, by Michael Hirschorn, The Atlantic, January/February 2009 [emphasis added]

The prospect of the disappearance of the New York Times within a matter of months will bring wildly varying reactions in different quarters. Those gleefully anticipating its demise should know that Hirschorn goes on to conclude that the odds of the paper going away in May are "relatively slim." He anticipates a number of scenarios that would permit the paper to survive, including:

* sale of its share of its $600 million HQ, designed by the prestigious Renzo Piano * sale of its ownership interest in the Boston Globe and/or other subsidiaries including About.com and the Boston Red Sox. * sale of the paper outright to potential buyers such as David Geffen, Michael Bloomberg, Carlos Slim or even . . . Rupert Murdoch.

Still, Hirschorn doesn't entirely discount the possibility that the Times could actually go bye-bye. As he observes [emphasis added]:

With more than $1 billion in debt already on the books, only $46 million in cash reserves as of October, and no clear way to tap into the capital markets (the company’s debt was recently reduced to junk status), the paper’s future doesn’t look good.

Bailout time.

Watch Barry-O proclaim them an "American Institution" and feed 'em da bucks.

The Times needs to make a 40-50% cut in headcount by April or May in order to stay in business. The clock is ticking.

Guess where the next bailout money is headed. There is no way that the dems will let the NYT go under.

If the NY Slimes were honest and rue to their stated beliefs the building should not be sold.

It should be given back to the Indian tribe that it was stolen from.

NY Times: “All the Bias Unfit to Print”

I think I prefer that they survive in a crippled form, maybe with 1/2 of current staff and greatly reduced pretensions.

If they go away entirely then WaPo and/or other rags will simply fill the void.

If they survive as a shadow of their former liberal glory then they will continue to occupy cultural “space” while declining in influence.

Not a chance. Obama and the donks will bail them out, at which point they will become the official (as opposed to unofficial) propaganda arm of the donks.

The no. 1 campaign arm of the democratic party go out of business? Not a chance. A federal bailout would be immediate. After all, what other “business enterprise” could the left buy with taxpayer dollars and not have to worry about the mandatory insertion of leftist thugs to run it?
