I have a philosophical difference with you no matter were I live. I have a much higher threshold for chaos and a greater reluctance to use the swift strong arm of the state to prevent chaos. I choose freedom and risk. You choose to attenuate both freedom and risk.

I suppose what could be said is that a law to you (editorially speaking) is an irritant to me (editorially speaking) ....

Am just glad you libertarian loons mostly live in boondock areas so you do the least harm to society.
Except for those loons who voted third party and helped Al Franken along in his campaign.

Libertarians are another version of the far left.

I agree with you, just tired of being hit by people on phones.

We've reached the saturation point for laws. Henceforth, no new law may be passed without deleting an existing law.

That is all.

I’m not a libertarian. Libertarian is Spanish for “I want to smoke dope”. I voted for Mccain Palin even though to do so I had to hold my nose to vote for big government Republicans. I also voted for Bush 41 and Bush 43. I wish I had been old enough to vote for Ronaldus Magnus. He distrusted government intrusion as much as I do. I am a Ronald Reagan Republican. So you assume a great deal, and assume incorrectly. You also swerve right into ad hominum attacks without addressing the content of my arguments. Try again.

Great, lets just elect State Farm as titular head of government. That way scientific actuarial standards can take the place of actual human actions. So cause your insurance company says... That is reason enough to agitate for another law to be enforced at the point of a gun... Great.

Most codes such as building codes and many of our laws are now geared specifically to Insurers profit margins. Some like HMO's even enjoy special status in our nations courts. They are the number one most powerful Lobbying Group. The same Twits who demand you buckle up or in Tennessee two strikes and no more drivers license laws. Insurers now control a major portion of everyones life. Personally I loathe State Farm. The good neighbors held up a claim we had for nearly two years while their Shyster lawyers got the settlement down to nearly nil. Good Neighbor My ###

With your screen name, I was absolutely appalled by your position. It really galls me that a Reagan Conservative is called a Libertarian in today’s climate. (I’m the Reagan Conservative. I’m the dude being called a Libertarian.) Reagan said that Government is not the answer to the problem Government is the problem. Does that make Ronald Reagan a radical loony Libertarian...?

I am very sorry, and I am sure the deficiency lies with me but I do not understand your intent in this post.

Sorry.

The problem is that those of us who live in the boondocks wind up having to put up with the rules you people in the big city decide to inflict upon us.

I worked for Reagan when he first ran for Gov.
Saw him several time in person while Gov. and Pres.
and have spoken with him.

Also ret. from the Legal field with the County Attys.
Have delt with may who decided they don’t need laws especially new ones. Delt with a large number of homicides, child abuse, etc.

I’ve noticed that most “Reagans” here on FR aren’t.

I agree with you too. Even with these pesky cell phone using car drivers trying to kill me on my motorcycle. But I’m better at dodging them then I am at cops. The last thing I want to do is give the state more power.

Oh, OK. What I was referring to was first:

I just mentioned that my insurance company did a study of its claims and other insurance company claims and found out that there's the same amount of accidents while driving drunk as with using a cell phone while driving. It had nothing to do with the insurance company wanting to mandate some sort of law banning cell phone use while driving (which I understand is law in Washington as in other states).

The second thing was dealing with making laws. You cannot make a law that will prevent idiots from either killing themselves or doing injury or death to others.

There are people who will no matter what behave in irresponsible ways to hurt or kill innocents such as using a cell phone while driving and not paying attention to the two ton car they are controlling and/or being drunk while doing so.

Hope this clear it up.

Ok, congratulations. So that means that a desire for personal freedom is a secret longing to abuse children? Non Sequitur at best. Not sure what you mean other than demonstrating a background in law enforcement and by default you saw the nasty underbelly. That still does not change my desire for more freedom and less risk.

I have no problem with anyone exercising their freedom to drive a 7,000 pound vehicle at any speeds, on either side of the road, through red lights, through stop signs, while texting, talking, turned around to attend to kids in the back, or even while downing their 15’th beer for the day..... So long as they have no problem with me exercising my right to anticipate the danger they pose and pre-emptively empty a magazine or two into them in order to defend myself from the danger they pose to me.

Alternatively we could try to build a civilized society by acknowledging that operating heavy machinery at high energy levels (call it ‘driving a car’ if you wish) creates one of the most dangerous situations the average person will ever face in their day-to-day lives and therefore the operator (driver) carries enormous responsibility. Believing that you have some sort of right to endanger the lives of everyone around you with impunity is not ‘freedom’ it is criminal negligence at best. Think about it, and think about your 45,000 fellow Americans that die every year on your roads.

Perhaps the voices of the relatives of those killed by distracted drivers should be given extra weight in this debate?
