Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) likely will introduce his controversial legislation to reinstate the draft again this year, but he will wait until after the economic stimulus package is passed.
Asked if he plans to introduce the legislation again in 2009, Rangel last week said, Probably yes. I dont want to do anything this early to distract from the issue of the economic stimulus.
Rangels military draft bill did create a distraction for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) soon after Democrats won control of Congress after the 2006 election.
In the wake of that historic victory, Pelosi said publicly that she did not support the draft and that the Democratic leadership would not back Rangels legislation. She also said Rangels legislation was not about reinstating the draft but was instead a way to make a point about social inequality.
Reintroducing the military draft bill, which would attract media attention, will be trickier for Rangel in 2009 than it was a couple years ago because the Ways and Means Committee chairman is now under investigation by the House ethics committee.

You just can’t bring out a good anti war protest crowd without a draft.
Hey young people, here is some change for you.
Now a-ten-hut you maggots who voted for 0bama.
There are a lot of Freepers who don't believe that.
Either that or they have no compunction to fragging our own troops.
Draft da homos!!!
Any threat to this Nation or the Constitution on which it is established is Treason against the citizens of the United States of America.
You need not have a law degree or be a Judge to understand that.
Elections matter, People!
And just remember this: Rangel did this before. He introduced it...THEN HE VOTED AGAINST IT!
Whats Rangle’s Angle?
Well, as soon as you have a draft you have moral grounds to object to a war as was made precedent with Vietnam.
Introduced by a democrat, rammed through both houses by democrats, signed into law by a democrat.
Point of order: This would be a draft measure that was signed into law by someone WHO NEVER SERVED IN THE MILITARY but now wants us all to serve our communities for free. At least Rangel served in the army, more than we can say for O’Vomit.
Yea,he’d last about as long as it took to put the proper knot on the end of a rope.
Why would a Kenyan national serve in the US military?
“pickle dancers”
Hmmm, never heard that one before. Guess I’ll add it to my list of colorful epithets for residents of the Castro...
The TRUTH is that it is WHITES that serve (VOLUNTEER) in the VAST MAJORITY of no-sh*t, rubber-meets-the-road combat positions/MOS's - where one is most likely to die in ultimate service to their country.
The truth is, that black enlistments have gone DOWN since it became quite clear that one could ACTUALLY get kille or maimed in combat in Iraq, while the same is not true of white enlistments into combat MOS's.
The irony is that, if this goofball racist's (Rangel) draft bill passes, then his fellow blacks may be FORCED to serve in units and locations where they be more likely to die.
Something MOST of them would have NEVER volunteered for.
These idiots will probably employ the same device FDR did to solve the economic problems government/Democrats helped to create back in the 30s: A nifty WAR.
Just as before, it will require millions of warm bodies.
Any draft is a stupid idea. If the people won’t volunteer to fight, then the war isn’t worth fighting.
This has nothing to do with military service....and is only about power....
“Whats Rangles Angle?”
...he was in the Korean War when American men from all walks of life were in the Army...it’s a better for the country when rich and poor alike have to shoulder the burden....we’re at the beginning of a very long war...Islam will keep coming.
Now I wonder how all those young people feel about their choice of the obamination - he'll be taking choice away from them right quick
