Corporate America sells Obama, message of change

The guys hawking Barack Obama T-shirts and trinkets on the corners of downtown Washington have some new competition in the selling frenzy building up to the president-elect's inauguration Tuesday — Corporate America.

Companies ranging from global giants like soda and snacks maker PepsiCo to a local grocery chain offering cakes with Obama's face in icing are jumping on the Obama commercial wave. Others, like the Swedish home store Ikea, are hoping consumers take Obama's mantra of "change" to heart so much that they go out and buy furniture to mark the change in the White House.

It is relatively rare for corporations leery of alienating consumers with any whiff of politics to associate themselves with a political figure, according to marketing experts. But at a time when many Americans have snapped their wallets shut during a grinding recession, the groundswell of popularity that Obama has generated with his upbeat campaign themes, along with the symbolism he brings as the nation's first black president, are likely too good for many battered retailers to pass up.

"This occasion is more exciting than most presidential inaugurations," said Noel Hankin, senior vice president for multicultural relations for Hennessy, which is selling a limited edition bottle of cognac with the number "44" on it to mark Obama's spot in the line of presidents. "We think this is an appropriate way to celebrate and honor him."

Congratulations on an extraordinary history making election!

We can think back with pride to decades of hard work toward our strategic goal of a big enough, broad enough and united enough labor and all-people’s movement that could overcome the ultra-right blockage to all progress. That all people’s movement has come to life, it is dynamic and it has the potential to keep growing.

The election of Barack Obama and a strengthened Congress creates new conditions in our country. There is now the possibility to shift gears and move forward. This new day requires us to further develop our tactics in order to continue to deepen and broaden labor and people’s unity.

There are thousands of experiences that we all have had in these momentous days, some large, some small, all of which express the enormity of change in thinking and readiness for involvement that is underway and that steels us for the battles ahead.

It is so very true with both of your statements. The good book says “pride comes before a fall and a haughty spirit before destruction” We see this in brazen abundance. Obama has become the golden calf of a large number of the American people.

The stress on the historic element Obama’s election has been overdone. History happens every day: birth, death, creation, destruction, celebration, mourning — all are a part of our history. Barack Obama is simply a half-white dude, raised by trashy communist sympathizing white folks.
It would have been much more historic if Hillary Clinton, or Clarence Thomas had been elected. For Hillary is a female, and Clarence Thomas is a true African-American man who overcame REAL poverty and rascism.
