“On July 2, 2007, Betty turned 18. Two days later she returned to the sect, celebrating what she now calls her own independence day.”
It’s still a free country.
People allow themselves to be chained and beaten all the time. Why should this chick be any different?
Interested?
“Why should this chick be any different?”
Maybe she doesn’t like freeways, fast food, filthy streets, crime infested neighborhoods - you know, the normal American life style.
Maybe she likes to be beaten.
Bump for later reading, after the comments really get going.
Or maybe she likes Koolaid
I read several books on polygamous cults this past year. One of the recurring traits of the people in the cult is the complete inability to tell the truth. Even back to the 1800’s, they had no affection for truth. They would lie effortlessly to protect the cult.
When they split from the LDS church, the LDS protected them for a while. When they became a liability due to the actions of the leaders (who condemned the LDS church), the LDS church dropped them. Even after that, the cult members would lie to the LDS church to gain access to the temples. They even wrote about in their diaries. I was amazed at their ability to lie without shame while leading such seemingly pious lives.
It was positively Clintonian.
in memory of Betty...
mormon subjugation of women placemarker
So are you insisting that the allegations of beating and brainwashing are false, or that the camp is justified in beating and brainwashing her? Or that one charge is false, and the other is justified?
I live in the greatest nation on earth, too bad you don't feel that way.
I find cults that allow middle age men to molest underage teenage girls, to be repulsive. The people who enable this are just as repulsive.
However once people turn the legal age, they can make their own decisions.
>> Maybe she doesnt like freeways, fast food, filthy streets, crime infested neighborhoods - you know, the normal American life style. <<
So, in order to avoid fast food, filthy streets and crime-infested neighborhoods, she should put up with sexual subjugation, beatings, etc.?
“Maybe she likes to be beaten.”
That’s just plain silly.
Then she should move to Saudi Arabia or Iran.
“I read several books on polygamous cults this past year. “
Written by ex FLDS or ex polygamists with major axes to grind. I’m not gettin’ over the horrific way the authorities treated those little FLDS children! And talk about lies!! TX CPS wrote that book.
“mormon subjugation of women placemarker”
They are not Mormons and you know it.
Have you forgotten - or did you ever know - that the charges of child abuse have for the most part been proven to be lies. In fact the whole mess started because of a lie told by a whacked out liar.
“I find cults that allow middle age men to molest underage teenage girls, to be repulsive. The people who enable this are just as repulsive.”
Not one person has been convicted of any such thing so I don’t know where you are getting these charges. It was the TX authorities who molested and abused the FLDS children.
“They are not Mormons and you know it.”
They self identify as mormons. They are Fundamentalist
Latter Day Saints. They use the same scriptures. They worship
the same cultic gods. They share much of the same history.
Their founder is a descendant of Joseph Smith, the cultic
founder of mormonism.
They say they are mormons. Who am I (or you, for that matter)
to tell them they are not mormons?
They are not the identical group of mormons as those
headquartered in Salt Lake City, but they are mormons -
or mormonites, if you prefer.
Which of their beliefs, specifically, do you think makes
them not mormons?
From Wikipedia...
“The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS Church) is one of the largest Mormon fundamentalist denominations[1][2] and one of United States’ largest practitioners of plural marriage.[3] The FLDS Church emerged in the early 1900s when its founding members left The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The split occurred largely because of the LDS Church’s renunciation of polygamy and its decision to excommunicate practitioners of plural marriage.”

It appears to any objective observer, that they are more
original in their mormon beliefs than the SLC LDS group.
There appears to be one major difference:
FLDS believe in polygamy on earth
LDS believe in polygamy for eternity
Are their other differences I am not aware of?
