I am an engineer...hope my talents can be put to good use in rebuilding this country and earn a living at the same time

I sure hope so!

I had thoughts of suicide (make it look like an accident)in order to make sure my family at least had insurance money...

Most states and many policies have a clause that has pay out for suicide if the policy is more than 2 years old.

The problem is, many people have their life insurance through their employer, so it's a gamble to hang on until a layoff notice arrives. To take advantage of the insurance investment, a person has to take action prior to getting notice--a notice that might not have been coming. Similar to the way no assistance in suicide leads people to take their lives while they still can do it themselves instead of waiting, this setup sadly promotes premature deaths.

We are not weak, pitiful people...we can and will get through this together as a family. We will do exactly that.

Please don't think that suicide indicates a weak, pitiful person (I'm not sure if this was what your wife said or you). Frankly, some of the strongest and most admirable people I've known have gone that way.

But you highlight one of the very important things--your family. While there is responsibility inhernet in providing for a family, they can also help relieve some burden on you via mutual support. Being able to discuss it with your wife so openly is a blessing, too.

Sometimes it takes more courage to keep on living then to give up-[...]

Definitely.

Of course, many decide that there's not much point in living, but that's where your family gives you a good reason to go on.

There have been some highly publicized suicides from economic news, but they aren't the only cases out there. I know of a 40-something single man who has no family (parents, etc.) who decided recently that it wasn't worth it without a job, but it's not newsworthy like the CA murder-suicide.

And suicide for economic reasons is far from new. In fact, if you look in history, some fathers have sold tickets to watch their suicides, with the proceeds going to the fheir survivors!!

[...] certainly the easy way out.

Rarely is it easy.

It's a topic too little discussed openly. Everyone wants to avoid it and pretend it's not there, until someone dies and they all stand around and wonder why the deceased never told anybody what he was thinking!

Thanks for your thoughtful post...It was very helpful...this is why I love FR...they have people like you...LOL Today is the day, I find out...but I will stay strong. My neighbor hung himself in October his kids were grown. His wife had died or perhaps he was divorced-very private person we talked about sports and such but nothing personal...he was only in his late 40’s or early 50’s. He got laid off from Adelphi so you are right about family pulling you through when you lose your job.
