WALLACE: You are one of the co-founders of something called the Republican Leadership Council which supports candidates who favor abortion and gay rights.

STEELE: Yes.

The nomination of McCain and the election of Steele is absolute concrete proof that Republican Party train has left the conservative station.

From Reagan to this in 20 short years I would have thought impossible...

Some of you folks are funny.

If Reagan is truly the model, please tell me when he ever refused to work with somebody over a difference of opinion on gay rights or abortion issues.

The Reagan Revolution was primarily about small, conservative government. Rarely did he mention gay rights or aboriton policy. His positions on the issues were well known, but he did not seek to create division among those who disagreed.

In fact, it was quite the contrary. Reagan went to great lengths to reach out to those who disagreed with him, as long as he was able to win on principle.

Reagan never had to compromise his beliefs, nor did he exclude anyone who may have differed.
