Surtsey still surprises (land features thought to take millions of years form in less than a decade)

Surtsey still surprises

by David Catchpoole

After the island of Surtsey was born of a huge undersea volcanic eruption off Iceland in 1963,1 geologists were astonished at what they found.

As one wrote: ‘On Surtsey, only a few months sufficed for a landscape to be created which was so varied and mature that it was almost beyond belief.’2

There were wide sandy beaches, gravel banks, impressive cliffs, soft undulating land, faultscarps, gullies and channels and ‘boulders worn by the surf (see picture left), some of which were almost round, on an abrasion platform cut into the cliff.’2 And all of this despite the ‘extreme youth’3 of the island!

The geologists’ surprise is understandable, given the modern thinking that young Surtsey’s ‘varied and mature’ features ought to have needed long periods of time—millions of years—to form....

"Then why am I not confounded by it?"

Obviously Rolf is confounded by all of God's word, and assumes undiscernable allegory as a defense of his befuddlement.

There is no allegory in God's word that is not announced in advance.

For the evolution of life from a slime pool to every form of life seen on earth demands long periods of time, not just for the earth's existence, but for the existence of life its self.

But if life appeared suddenly, if complicated life forms arose without eons of evolutionary change, if a rutabaga will never become a rabbit, then evolution doesn't function and cannot be a leg of support to anything else.

That would be unthinkable. After all Gould said one could question the how but never the fact of evolution.

But has not evolution been demonstrated as fact to a point where, in Gould's words, it would be “perverse” to believe otherwise?

No. Someone picking up a piece of skull and saying it is millions of years old and constructing an imaginary body for it down to the hair and skin color is perverse.

Add to the above the forming of species by natural selection when there is no definition of a species beyond what the Bible describes as a “kind”.

What the young earth believe is their affair. Darwinism is no alternative and has the added failing of being materialist at it's core

No.

Yes. It appears we are at an impasse.

“Exodus plainly states that Torah was written on stone by the finger of YHWH”

That’s the Ten Commandments; not the whole Torah.

Genesis, as well as most other parts of the Bible were written by divinely inspired men. The only parts that you can be absolutely assured are exact translations from the Divine are those passages where He tells a prophet exactly what to say, and the words of Christ.

No, not just the ten commandments, but the entire Torah.

“Well, when it says, Thou shalt not kill, how am I missing the meaning?”

Well, your example is a very good one. The sixth commandment, properly translated and understood, is

“Thou shall not murder.”

Significant? You Bet!

“God made sure that, through those who recorded his Inspired word, the meaning of His Word was not lost.”

AGREED 100% ! The meaning of His word is not corrupted, but men corrupt that meaning in their own minds when they refuse to see the full truth beyond the words.

Why is it so threatening to you to acknowledge that perhaps Moses’s retelling of creation is a shortened version of an immense process taking eons? The essential truth is: God created everything seen and unseen on Earth and Heaven! That He did it in 6 Earth days is NOT an article of our Faith! If you think it is, you're “straining at gnats!”

As I said before, what we learn by way of science, cannot be in conflict with the TRUTH. God created the physical world, and we are expected to learn about it, and thereby Him. If what we learn from the physical world SEEMS to contradict scripture, it is because we have misunderstood either God's revelation to us in scripture, or misunderstood the physical evidence.

Right now, at this point in time, MOST of the evidence points to a very old Earth by Man's reckoning.

Quite sanctimonious, aren't we?

"There is no allegory in God's word that is not announced in advance."

You need to spend more time reading the Good Book my FRiend; especially the New Testament, where Christ says several times the meanings are hidden from those wise in the eyes of the world.

eg: "I Am the bread of life."

"Now that we know all of biology and all of geology are atheistic...."

Will you liars ever tire of this strawman?

Nothing in real biology, nor real geology, have anything to do with your insane drivel.

“The meaning of His word is not corrupted, but men corrupt that meaning in their own minds when they refuse to see the full truth beyond the words.” [excerpt]
Or when they try to get Genesis to fit their preconceived ideas how God must have done things.
“Why is it so threatening to you to acknowledge that perhaps Moses’s retelling of creation is a shortened version of an immense process taking eons?” [excerpt]
Why is it so threatening to you to acknowledge that perhaps Moses' record of the Creation is accurate and that it only took 6 days like God said it did?

Remember, Jesus believed Genesis.

“If what we learn from the physical world SEEMS to contradict scripture, it is because we have misunderstood either God's revelation to us in scripture, or misunderstood the physical evidence.” [excerpt]
And if our faith in the physical evidence as interpreted by some 'scientist' [who may have a vested interest in undermining our faith] is greater than our faith in God's Word, then we compromise the Bible.

“Right now, at this point in time, MOST of the evidence points to a very old Earth by Man's reckoning.” [excerpt]
At least the evidence you accept.

Careful, your pride is overflowing.

ES, it is telling how you avoid answering the points I make.

Ad Hominem attacks are the sign of someone who lacks countering facts.

Seriously, may I suggest that we all pray for more wisdom about this. Dissension among His faithful (especially over petty issues) is cannot pleasing to the Lord.

Except maybe the grand canyon. Evo's still can't explain where billions of tons of silt from billions of years of erosion are that should be at the mouth of river where it dumps into the Pacific.

Considering the Colorado Delta used to cover nearly 2 million acres, I'd say that's a pretty flimsy argument on your part. Just because it's hard to tell there is a delta there now because the entire river is diverted before it reaches the Sea of Cortez does not mean there is not a broad area of delta sediments.

If you're going to say that you 'fully support' your 'friends' over there, maybe you should actually hang out over there and keep track of what they are saying.

That forum was originally comprised 100% of Freepers. Freepers who were here for many, many years.

PPS. We did. Quite honestly. But you weren't around for that, so your ignorance on this matter can be forgiven.
