Russia Freezes Sale Of S-300 To Iran

Russia has frozen the sale of the state-of-the-art S-300 anti-aircraft missiles to Iran, the Russian newspaper Kommersant reported Wednesday.

Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar was reportedly informed of the decision by his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov on his visit to Moscow on Wednesday.

Russia said the delivery of the systems would be delayed at least until the upcoming meeting between President Dmitry Medvedev and his US counterpart, Barack Obama. Kommersant cited Russia's wish to prevent hindering dialogue with the new US administration.

Only to be used as a bargaining chip in preventing a missile defense shield from being built in Eastern Europe. You have to ask your self what is the ability to shoot down a nuclear tipped missile really worth?

IIRC, the implementation of the S-300 system was one of Israel’s redlines. They’d strike before the system could be fully deployed.

He is telling Obama that if wants Russian help with Iran he can deliver and if Obama does not stop the deployment of a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe he can also give him a stick.

The Russians play this game quite well and Obama is about to get punked.

Probably a press or PR ploy...publicly say the sale is frozen...but you sneak them to Iran thru back-channels.

Look at a map....Russia can fly the equipment piece-meal from Russia to Iran over the Caspian Sea...without going thru any other nation’s airspace.

Putin expects that his first meeting with ODumbo will be a modern-day Yalta Conference.

I fully expect ODumbo to go along, not only by caving on the missiles in Eastern Europe, but also by stabbing Georgia and Ukraine in the back, dropping the US embargo against Cuba, and permitting the building of a Soviet (um, I mean Russian) naval base in Cuba or Venezuela.

Once all of that has occurred, he will go ahead and sell the S-300's to Iran as originally planned. After all, business is business for the Russians (and ODumbo will be ODumbo)...
