It won’t happen with GPS. Too unwieldy.

Not hardly. It would be easy. On new cars off the assembly line it would be easy to integrate it with existing electronics. Existing cars bolt on a GPS receiver and ram chip somewhere in the undercarriage with a lock-out/tag-out. Run a USB port to the dash or under the hood. Total size would be smaller than a pack of cigarettes.

In many States when you register your car they give it a quick "safety" inspection already, in my county it's emissions checks every six months. Add in plugging a netbook or handheld mobile PC into that USB port to read the mileage off the GPS.

Track when the GPS was installed, and if you don't get one installed you can't register your car so it's illegal to drive it on public roads. GPS serial number gets tagged with the car's VIN number. Further check by comparing GPS mileage with OD mileage. If they don't match or are outside small margin of error (due to GPS reception) then an exemption is filled and you get to pay more to have a replacement GPS installed.

Give me a month and I could get all that developed in prototype including interface software and database to house the information, using existing off the shelf hardware.

Later on "upgrades" could include routes traveled, travel time, stop time, average speed, stop time, engine running time....all things current GPS will do. Could easily add that to the interface software but development time would go to say six months.

Now I'm not going to do that job no matter how much they pay me, but I'm sure someone will.

If I were an evil commie liberal puke, and wanted to mandate this sort of mileage tax, I would put it in the gas pumps...ie..

All new cars would have a “port” to plug in a reader to the computer system and read the mileage, add in the taxes to the pump price, then reset to the new mileage.

The Gov would just force the stations to install the new pumps.

Before the pump would start you would have to plug in the reader.

No GPS, no massive tracking of every vehicle and their tax money would get sent in by the stations that collect it.

It really wouldn't be that hard because every new car with a computer already has a port to plug in and read the computer to diagnose problems.

And yet, in just the 20th century we've seen examples of whole nations being taken over by systems that ended up being totalitarian, facist, communist. Russia, Germany, China, Cambodia to name a few.

And they did it without the modern technology that is at our government's reach and disposal now.

Granted the countries were probably not in great shape to begin with - internal strife and all.

From my perspective, there are now enemies to freedom loving America running this country now. And I have no doubt they are and have been causing and planning enough internal strife to tear us apart and take over and obliterate our Constitution.

Our government has in the works plans to have each and every one of our health records in their database. As far as I'm concerned, if they can reach that goal, they can reach their mileage tax goal via GPS - maybe not this year or next but sometime down the road (no pun intended).

I would believe all the info would be stored on each car..and retrieved upon your yearly inspection...

xzins, when WA put in the 2nd Tacoma Narrows Bridge, they came up with a transponder system so motorists can bypass the toll booth, and pay a smaller toll to boot.

The mechanism reads the transponder while taking a picture of you, your licence plate, and any trailer you may be towing. It counts the axles on the trailer to determine how much to charge it.

All this is all done as the vehicle drives by at 50mph along with the calculations and subsequent fees deducted from your account. If you try to skip paying the toll, you get a fine and presumably a visit by the ever increasing amount of State Patrol.

What's to stop authoritarian, out of control spending states like WA from installing thousands of these on every arterial in the state?

Certainley not the will of the people.

It’s a tax break for those that drive old guzzlers. An anti-green tax. LOL It will help the poor since they disproportionately pay more in gas tax. It will also infuriate the greenies since there will be no motivation to purchase their green cars (and even electric cars will have to pay the tax.)

Or am I missing something?

As a long time Hybrid driver, I can say this points up the total hypocrisy of Democratic support for environmentalism and efficiency.

Those ideas go out the window if they get in the way of a “new revenue source”.

I do note, there is not a peep from Sierra Club or other enviro groups on this.

>>Now this is a punishment of conservatives, because if you look at the voting map the RED STATES are more rural, and the BLUE STATES are more larger cities and closer together. That means the Conservative States will pay more mileage taxes, since people like Biden who ride the train and use more public transportation will pay none. Inner city people on welfare and subsidized housing rents will pay none.<<

A counter point is that its a punishment to people who drive hybrids who will have have to pay the full tax even though they use a lot less gas.

The tax is per mile, so it depends on how many miles you drive, and not the kind of car you drive. Those in Red Repub Voting areas have a longer commute for jobs, but also for groceries, school activities and general car use. These towns and rural areas are more spread out than NYC, Boston or Seattle, where everything is within a few miles of the homes.
Yes, the hybrids will also pay the tax, and if they shelve it and revive it later it may have another twist. Three states are considering implementing it as a state tax. If you travel, or have longer commute then you will pay more tax-— plus there is already gas tax...so it’s double taxation, if mileage tax gets implemented.
